A Word from the Pastor
On Monday, we remembered Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his many contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. Chances are at some point in the day, you heard an excerpt of his “I Have a Dream” speech. It’s his most memorable speech, and it almost didn’t happen.

Dr. King was scheduled to speak at the 1963 March on Washington. He was told he had only five minutes, which gave him time for only a single point. He had two speeches to choose from, one of them being his dream. He chose the other and gave that speech in front of a crowd of 250,000. He was nearing the end when it was clear that his message had not resonated as he had hoped. When he began to realize this, he heard the distinct voice of the gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.

Jackson had followed King and was a trusted friend. King would often call her in the darkest moments of the Civil Rights Movement just to hear her sing. She had heard of King’s dream, so when she saw him struggling to get his vision across to the crowd, she cried out, “Tell them about the dream, Martin! Tell them about the dream.” Dr. King looked over his shoulder at Mrs. Jackson and took his prepared speech and set it to the side of the podium. And he said,

"I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.

It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!”

What a dream indeed. On Monday, my prayer was that the church would share King’s vision, as I believe it is rooted in God’s desire for us. From the beginning, God’s intent was that His creation would exist in harmony. For humanity, this means that our God-given differences aren’t meant to divide, but rather to serve as an expression of God’s creative capacity. We are all image-bearers, which means that we cannot allow something as thin as a layer of skin to come between us. Galatians 3:28 reminds us that in Christ, “there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

So Lord, we ask You to make Your dream for creation a reality in us, Your church. Make us one with one another as we are one with You. Amen.
