Check Out What's New at Crowder!

 February 2023

Photo of Red-bellied Woodpecker climbing pine tree.

Red-bellied Woodpeckers are a common sight on trees and bird feeders throughout the year in North Carolina. Though the male bird in this photo has striking red colors on its crown and nape, the species is named for its “red belly,” a patch of red feathers that is usually covered by surrounding feathers. Scientists came up with this name from studying specimens, rather than by observing live birds in the wild; the red belly can be more easily seen when holding a bird.

Special thanks to volunteer Sam Ray for this photo.

Self-Guided Activities!

Crowder

Activity Packs

Are you and your family looking for some fun, self-guided activities to do while in the park?

We have now put out our winter-themed “Crowder Activity Pack,” which can be found at the front office or by the restrooms at the Upper Pavilion.

These packs include fun scavenger hunts you can complete while in the park, and even some take-home activities as well!

StoryWalks® at Crowder

Crowder is excited to offer you and your families a wonderful interactive StoryWalk® activity within the park!

Join us for this fun, self-guided activity. This will be located on the Outer Loop Trail, beginning at the park's Bird Garden, which is immediately on the left as you enter the park, across from the park's office.

This wonderful program combines the joy of reading a story while also getting out and enjoying nature. This hike is around 0.8 miles.

New to the StoryWalk® concept? Laminated pages from a children's book are attached to signs, which are installed along an outdoor path. As you stroll down the trail, you're directed to the next page in the story. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
