Save Our Trees

by Dott Pitts & Nancy Crowe

CONGRATULATIONS RICHARDSON!

For the very first time, the City of Richardson has received Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation. To earn this honor in 2024, Richardson had to meet the following standards:

  • Maintain a Tree Board or department
  • Have a community tree ordinance
  • Spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry
  • Participate in an Arbor Day celebration

One such commitment to this is the program, Richardson Replants, which serves to replace damaged or lost trees from severe storms around the city. Free trees are offered to Richardson residents free of charge to replace those lost in your yards.

Upcoming free tree giveaways are:

  • April 12- at Mimosa Park, 1200 Mimosa Dr. from 9-11 am
  • April 25- at Terrace Park, 200 N. Lois Ln. from 1-3:30 pm

Types of trees available include: Chinkapin Oak, Desert Willow and Peach

Check out planting and caring for your new trees at www.cor.net.

We also have a responsibility as Crowley Park residents to maintain the tree canopy in our own neighborhood. Here are some things we can do:

  1. Use knowledgeable professionals (arborists) to trim our trees.
  2. Know the appropriate season for trimming trees.
  3. Trees in your yard improve the quality of life for the ENTIRE neighborhood
  4. Trees add to the value of homes in our neighborhood (especially large shade trees)
  5. Trees add to the quality of the air we breathe
  6. Trees improve our mental health
  7. Trees reduce our carbon footprint
  8. Trees provide shade, just look at our own Crowley Park and all the new trees acquired   through our Shade the Trail Program
  9. Trees rarely cause foundation or plumbing issues; our clay soil and not watering our foundations are usually the culprits

REMEMBER – It takes 30-40 years to grow a mature, beautiful shade tree! Don’t cut it down and take away all those years in 1 hour!! Our trees are a valuable resource!!
