Notes from Tom Paulson

My sister was also a music major at St. Olaf College, Northfield, five years before me. As I prepared to start college, she told me that Music Theory is the bane of many an aspiring music major’s existence. “You spend the first semester learning a bunch of rules, and the next three systematically breaking them all.” In my experience it wasn’t so much breaking the rules as applying them in creative ways.
I was teaching a choir to sing a song from Africa, and the next step was to learn the Swahili. I’m a strong believer in singing music of other cultures and times. As we sing that music, we experience, if just for a moment, the lives of people in other times and places. “I hate singing in languages other than English.” I can still she her red, angry face in that rehearsal. Empathy for someone else was too much to ask today.
God has this way of breaking ourselves out of the boxes we build around ourselves, whether we like it or not. One of my boxes was secular music in worship. I now often see a blurry distinction between “secular” and “sacred.” You Raise Me Up was probably written as a love song, but listening to it with fresh ears, it sounds a lot like God’s love.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains, You raise me up to walk on story seas.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders, You raise me up to more than I can be.

I pray that this Easter we will all be raised up to more than we can be.

Living Liturgy: Part 3
As we live into the liturgy of Holy Week, here are some practices to guide us to pray with our bodies at home:
  • Create a cross from objects you find around your home, yard, or on a walk. Place the cross in a place you will look at it often. Let the cross guide you to pray in the days ahead. You might even create your own cross wall with members of your family! Share your pictures of your crosses online on Crown of Glory Facebook page or email to Kellie@crownofglory.org
  • Set a small bowl with some water on your table and light a candle at each meal. The light of Christ is with you always. Let your light shine! Be reminded of your baptism, Jesus’ washing the disciples feet, and inviting us to wash one another’s feet through service. What other Bible stories contain water and light? Where did you experience water and light in your day? At the end of the meal bless one another (or yourself). Dip your finger in the water of the blessing bowl and trace the sign of the cross on a forehead with these words: “(Name), child of God, you are washed and chosen to bear God’s light in the world.” Receiver of the blessing responds: “Amen”. (Amen means “Yes, I agree! Let it be so!” and “ I will and I ask God to help and guide me!”)

Beacon Rally for Home (From Home!)
Thursday, April 16 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
If the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us anything, it is how crucial it is to have a place to call home so that we can “shelter in place”. Also, our own health and well-being is integrally tied to the health and well-being of everyone in our community. Home is a basic structure that effects health in community. We who are healthy and housed can act boldly today while building toward tomorrow to support everyone in our communities having a place to call home.

Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative is a group of committed staff and volunteers working to end homelessness. The proposed development of Prairie Point in Shakopee is a way to serve families experiencing homelessness in Scott and Carver County by creating 50 homes with onsite support services for families. This online rally will be an informative and important preparation for your participation in Beacon’s newest family supportive housing. O ur elected officials want to see and hear from you! They will follow our lead in creating community that will "point the way home", for families experiencing homelessness! This rally will be groundwork for the Shakopee Planning Commission Vote scheduled for Thursday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. Register here  for these events! Instructions for how to access this virtual meeting will come in your registration confirmation email.

Crown of Glory is a partner with Beacon and is forming a Beacon Leadership Team as an expression of our faith and love toward our neighbors experiencing homelessness. Contact Pastor Reggie , Pastor Laura or Gretchen Pierskalla to learn ways to be part of this movement.
