SPARK Lesson: "Jesus' Baptism"
This Sunday, during the Children’s Message, Jenni Payne will be reading Mark 1:4-11 from our SPARK Story Bibles. Be sure to have yours with you and follow along! We will hear about how Jesus was baptized and that through our own baptisms, we can remember that we are God’s beloved children! Do you remember your baptism? Ask your parents/guardians to tell you about that special day and show you your baptismal candle!
January SPARK Bags

Due to increased COVID precautions, January SPARK bags have been cancelled.
Nursery Nuggets
Hi Nursery Buddies and Parents!

Since yesterday was King’s Day, we are done with all the celebrations surrounding the birth of Christ Jesus. But wait! Does it have to end? I sure hope not. Each and every day Jesus is with us, and that calls for a celebration of joy for every one of them! Although I took down the Christmas decorations at my house, I still have some winter decorations up to help keep light throughout the winter. There are always things to look forward to, like setting goals. You could set a goal to help cook dinner a few times a week, or keep your room picked up and tidy for a whole week with out being asked! Those things can actually bring us closer to Jesus by being obedient, hard working and helpful.

Activity: Here is a list of something called affirmations. An affirmation is a daily reminder of something good. A daily way to keep celebrating Jesus is a by celebrating Jesus in us through the Holy Spirit. I have put together some and made them in away that you can color them yourself!

Music Notes
"We are baptized in Christ Jesus; we are baptized in his death;
That as Christ is raised victorious, we might live a brand-new life.
And if we have been united in a dreadful death like his,
We will all be reunited, for he lives."
(John Ylvisaker, ELW #451)

These words probably sound familiar to you; we sing this song two or three times a year in worship. They are a good encapsulation of the many reasons why we baptize and help us teach what we believe. (It also has a creative, sing-able melody, which always helps!) In baptism we remember that each person is a unique and unrepeatable miracle of God, blessed to be a blessing, to ourselves and others.

On Sunday, we’ll read in the gospel of Mark how Jesus came to the river Jordan to be baptized by John, the Baptizer. Jesus came to be claimed by God as a unique and unrepeatable miracle, to be claimed as God’s beloved.

As I write this on Thursday morning, January 7, 2021, I take extra comfort in Mr. Ylvisaker’s words. In my baptism God claims me as God’s own. I am claimed by the light of the world, the word made flesh, the God of love, the bread of life, the same God that claims you, and all people. I pray that God gives me, you, and all people, the grace, and the will to live into that claim.

Restoring God's Earth: A Year of Personal Action
What if there were a series of small acts of faith, small practices, and new habits we could start that would make a difference in care and concern for God’s creation? Would you do it?

The Creation Care ministry is pleased to launch “Restoring God’s Earth,” a year-long program focused on caring for God’s creation. Each month we’ll introduce a new theme with information, tips, and practical ideas you can introduce into your life. These themes have been shown, and we have faith, that they will indeed make a change in the ways we treat creation. Small changes by all of us can make a big difference for our earth.

We invite you to learn more here and check out our January theme. Happy New Year!
