Growing in Faith Together
This week Jesus teaches the crowds about the kingdom of heaven in the parable of the sower, and tells the disciples what it means (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23). In the beloved community Jesus describes, what is sown in the hearts of all people is received differently. (v.19). Could it be love that is being sown? The sower throws love with joyful abandon everywhere! This is a picture of God, whose likeness we bear! In this beloved community there are birds and rocky soil and thorns, and good soil in each of us. And God keeps sowing love, without improving the soil one bit. This is good news!

How might this shape our prayer and practice this week? How do you spread love into your neighborhood and the world beneath your feet? You could invite the neighbors to a driveway singing contest to sing songs of love one after the other until you run out of songs. Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs…what’s wrong with that? They will know we are Christians by our love! So discover the many ways you can spread love with joy into your world this week and see what harvest will bring!
SPARK Lesson
Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23) is an illustration about the kingdom of heaven and gives its hearers a chance to imagine and wonder which types of “soil” represents their experience. We might find a bit of all the soils in us!
Nursery Nuggets
Hi Nursery Buddies and Parents!
Right now, there might be a lot of unknowns for you: When can we go to the beach? When can we go play? When can we go to school? When, when, when, when?
Did you know that asking a lot of questions makes you just like a disciple from the Bible? Yeah! They asked Jesus all kinds of questions. Since we are not able to ask Jesus questions directly, like the disciples did (apart from prayer when we talk to Jesus in heaven), we can get our answers from reading the Bible. It’s one of the best places to find Jesus! You might even want to ask your parents to watch this song on YouTube with you so that you can learn and sing together. It’s called The
Have fun!

Singing, Worship, and Covid-19: Problem or Opportunity?

I’ve spent my entire career encouraging people to sing - directing choirs, teaching voice lessons, leading congregations, etc. I love telling people, “If you sing well, sing to praise the giver. If you don’t sing so well, sing to get even!” Because in communal singing, it’s more important that we do it, than do it well.
On Sunday July 12, when we get together outdoors for worship, “There will not be any collective speaking or singing; all music will be provided by the worship team for the congregation to listen to and enjoy.” So says our very researched guidelines for worship. I know this is necessary, I understand about aerosols spreading Covid-19, and how choir members have spread the virus to each other by singing together. But it breaks my heart to say, “Don’t sing.”
In these Covid-19 months, I’ve prayed more than once, “God, give me the flexibility and perseverance to think outside the box.” So, in that spirit, let me encourage you to “sing” outside the box.
  1. The order of worship will be available on our website. Bring it up on your phone, follow along with the music and mouth the words. (No one will see you; you’re wearing a mask!) Take special note of a phrase that speaks most deeply to you.
  2. Move with the music, dance if you want to. We are all doing worship outside the box, in a different way, and probably outside our comfort zone.
  3. Don’t be afraid to just listen and let the sounds wash over you. Part of being together is simply being still, and feeling the reassuring presence of God.
I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday. It’s been too long since we’ve been all together in one place.
