Back-to-school season is the perfect time to focus on making learning fun for your kids! Although boating is a great way to escape reality, it can also be used as a tool to explore and learn about the world around us.
For instance, many of us appreciate nature more when we’re out on the water. And although we may not realize it, we utilize lessons about geography, math, and other subjects when operating a vessel, fueling up, and performing other boating tasks.
In this post, we'll explain how you can make learning onboard fun for your kids!
8 Boat Lessons that Kids Will Love

1. Use “red right return” to teach left from right
This famous saying could've been one of the first concepts you learned when you began boating. The alliteration is a reminder to keep red navigation aids on the starboard (a.k.a. right) side when returning from the open sea or heading upstream. It’s a simple concept that young children can comprehend, especially if they're learning left from right.
2. Use markers to teach ABCs and 123s
Small children love to count numbers and sing their ABCs. Conveniently, all sorts of markers have numbers on them, so you can use this as an opportunity to help your child practicing counting.

Orange County Yacht Clubs and Why They’re Great

One of the best ways to experience Orange County is by water, and the coastal cities that line the county are filled with boating enthusiasts and their favorite yacht club homes. Here are a few yacht clubs for boaters looking for a home to house their vessel or a community to join.

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club
The HHYC was formed in October of 1965 and is a welcoming place for boating and non-boating enthusiasts alike. Since 1966 the club has been a member of the Southern California Yachting Association, attaining senior membership in 1981. The club is also a current member of the United States Sailing Association and has a sailing school that trains more than 40 young sailors each year while also maintaining a competitive sailing program that has produced a good number of nationally ranked sailors, including crewmembers on the American entry in the America’s Cup racing series. In addition, traveling members of the HHYC are welcomed to clubs all over the world.

Safety at Sea Seminar to Take Place in October
Check out the Safety at Sea Seminar, hosted at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey Oct. 8-10 with moderator Captain John A. Miller.

Miller is a United States Coast Guard MM Master 100T with over 45 years of on-the-water experience. Miller has completed most of the available American Sailing Association sailing courses and is a certified ASA instructor. Additionally, he has organized, conducted, and instructed many US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminars in SoCal, certifying over 800 sailors, cruisers, racers, and power boaters. In 2021 Miller was nominated to become a US Sailing Safety at Sea Moderator.

There will be three courses offered over the weekend:

Breeze on from the Get-Go at Rolex Big Boat Series
“Today was pretty high winds: 25-27 knots,” said John Egleston when we talked with him at the St. Francis Yacht Club docks yesterday evening following the first day of racing in the Rolex Big Boat Series. The Eglestons and their crew sail the sleek black 56-ft 1928 P Class cutter Water Witch.

“I pulled into the parking lot this morning and there was breeze, so we knew we weren’t going to have a postponement, and we didn’t,” said Cam Tuttle, pit on the Dehler 46 Favonius. He called it a “super-pretty day.”

The Classics division was back with five entries. They have one race each day, starting and finishing in front of the St. Francis. (Other divisions have two races a day, Thursday-Saturday, and one Bay Tour on Sunday.) Michael Zolezzi’s 8-Meter Yucca, with Hank Easom at the helm, finished first, but Beau and Stacey Vrolyk’s 60-ft 1947 Alden schooner Mayan was hot on her heels.

Homeward Bound, Part 3:
Naha, Japan to Port Townsend
Ginger wasn’t sure what to expect about cruising Japan. During our time aboard Irene in quarantine in Singapore, we had read and heard stories of difficulties cruising there. When she corresponded with various Japanese bureaucracies, she despaired at the complexity of the requirements. It seemed like every email revealed new hurdles.

As she worked at the computer, Ginger suddenly burst out laughing, “Listen to our arrival instructions from Naha Coast Guard.”
Peter poses with a statue in Japan.
“What’s up?” she read. “Now look, you’re gonna wanna tie up to the pier just before the bridge.” In contrast to the very formal, almost stilted language she had come to expect, a Japan Coast Guard officer had written perfect American slang. Our laugh foreshadowed more delightful surprises we enjoyed during our three-month cruise up the Japanese island chain.
