We have been noticing an increase in millipede activity recently, so here's what you should know:

Millipedes are commonly mistaken as worms or caterpillars; They are actually arthropods, meaning, unlike worms, they have an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages.

They differ from centipedes as they have a round head, short antenna, and most of their body segments have two pairs of legs; Centipedes, on the other hand, have long antenna, and most of their body segments only have one pair of legs. (See image)

Millipedes will spend most of their lives eating decomposing plant material, which makes them easy to find in leaf piles or any shady/humid places. If there is consistent rain, they will end up inside in search of shelter.

If millipedes end up inside your home, there is no need to worry. They usually die about a day or so after showing up inside. They are also docile, which means that they will not bite or attack if disturbed. Instead, they may coil their bodies in defense.

Some species may also emit a foul-smelling compound to repel predators. This compound is relatively harmless to humans, but it can irritate skin, so we recommend washing your hands if you touch any.

If you see an increase in millipede activity in your yard, and would like to get rid of them, you can call our office or visit our website to request a treatment.

For the majority of our customers, a millipede treatment is rarely needed; but if it is needed, you will usually need only 1 treatment. We are unable to treat indoors, but as mentioned previously, any inside activity will decrease after about a day or so.

AS ALWAYS, A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR VETERANS AND FIRST RESPONDERS
