This weekend’s readings introduce us to a man named Bartimaeus. He heard that Jesus of Nazareth is passing by. He called out to him, asking for pity since he is blind.

The crowd around Bartimaeus tried to silence him. Yet Bartimaeus persisted, crying out more loudly and with greater urgency. He will not be silenced or deterred from getting Jesus’ attention. It’s striking how quickly the crowd’s reaction changes when Jesus calls for Bartimaeus. Those who sought to quiet him now encouraged him.

Once his sight has been restored, Bartimaeus followed Jesus on His way to Jerusalem. Notice that Bartimaeus is portrayed as a disciple with faith. He called out to Jesus using the title “Son of David,” — professing belief that Jesus is the Messiah.

Bartimaeus teaches us that a little faith can really change our lives. What role does our faith play in our daily lives? Does our faith truly influence the way we live? Do we pray before making decisions? Do we share our faith with our family and friends?

Jesus reminds us that the faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain. Do you trust Jesus enough that He will heal you and give you sight (and insight) into whatever dilemma or obstacle you may be facing?
