As a new electronic medium of exchange, cryptocurrency (or digital currency) does not represent U.S. or foreign currency but relies on cryptography to secure transactions that are digitally recorded on a distributed ledger such as a blockchain. Bitcoin and tokens are units of cryptocurrency.

This lunchtime session will unveil the mysteries behind this often misunderstood financial product, including:

  • What is cryptocurrency and how does it function?
  • How are digital financial products sold and marketed?
  • What federal and/or state laws may apply to cryptocurrency?
  • Are cryptocurrency products securities?
  • What risks do investors face when investing in cryptocurrency?
  • Have regulators taken any significant enforcement actions in the cryptocurrency arena?

Course Level: Introductory

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences in advising clients regarding cryptocurrency.
