The trees of the wood...

This Sunday is Palm Sunday. We pin palm crosses and wave palm fronds. Why do we do this? We do this because they did this: So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; the King of Israel. (Jn 12:13)

But why did they do that? They waved palm fronds because they believed the following:

  • Israel’s true King was not just the king of Israel. Israel’s true King was the King of all creation.
  • Because Israel’s true King was the King of all creation, all creation would celebrate his enthronement: Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful (Ps 98:9) Let the field by joyful, and all that is in it, then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the Lord. (Ps 96:12)

The waving palms of the first Palm Sunday and the palm crosses and fronds of our Palm Sunday are creation’s homage to its King.

Warmly,

David
