February PFC Principal's Message
Dear Parents,

Happy February! The school year continues to fly past at a frenetic pace and so too do the accomplishments and activities at Chaparral Elementary School. Author and Philosopher Henry David Thoreau noted, “It is not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about?” At Chaparral we are busy with quality teaching and learning, connected to a myriad of instructional experiences, aimed at deepening and broadening our students’ understanding of topics and character traits needed to be happy and successful people.

Celebrate the 100th Day of School, Feb. 15
Students can either dress like they are 100 years old or can design a T-shirt with any way to represent 100. Think outside the box and show us how 100 can be represented by your student. Be creative and have fun! Every Friday is Spirit Day, and students can wear their "Cub Wear" or our school color of royal blue. Go C.U.B.S!
Welcome to Chaparral, Ms. Susan - our new Instructional Aide, Special Ed.
Hello Chaparral Cubs and Parents,

My name is Susan O’Hara, and I am super excited to join the staff here at Chaparral and to have the opportunity to work with your amazing Cubs!

For the past 17 years, I worked at a preschool in Thousand Oaks called Temple Adat Elohim. As much as I love the “little ones,” I felt the time to move on had come.

I have been married to my amazing husband, Stephen, for five years. Between us we have three daughters, one son, three grandchildren, four dogs, and one desert tortoise (currently hibernating!). We enjoy backpacking, dirt bike riding, hiking, camping and kayaking!

I have met many of your Cubs already and look forward to meeting many, many more.

Again, I am so happy to be here and would like to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome!

Here’s to a great future together!

Ms. Susan

Wellness Team Tip: 8 Best Tips for Cold
and Flu Prevention

1) START WITH GOOD HAND WASHING
I sound like a broken record every cold and flu season. The #1 tip for kids cold and flu prevention is hand washing – period. Be sure your kids know  how to properly wash hands , including how to use hand sanitizer correctly!
2) EAT A BALANCED DIET
Did you know that a majority of your body’s immunity lies in your gut? So much of your health depends on your food and drink! It’s so important to give your child a well-balanced diet with all of the energy, vitamins, and minerals, needed to get your child through the busy cold and flu season.
3) DRINK WATER, WATER AND MORE WATER
Sometimes your body needs to “flush” itself out! Yes, I do use this toilet analogy with my kids. And now more than ever is a good time to enforce lots of fluids for our kids. Constantly hydrating with at least 8 glasses of water and flushing out germs, it’s a natural way keep our kids healthy from the inside.
4) GET PLENTY OF SLEEP
Rest and recharge – sleep is such an important part to staying healthy during cold and flu season! Do you know how much sleep your child should get?
5) STAY ACTIVE
Want to naturally boost your child’s immunity? Get them to stay active! Indoors and outdoors, be sure they’re getting enough play time and exercise to help boost their natural immunity levels too.
6) DECREASE STRESS LEVELS
Conversely, increased levels of stress can weaken your child’s immunity. Helping your child to cope through stressful times through controlled breathing, positive affirmations, muscle relaxation and other techniques can help cold and flu prevention in kids.
7) SHARING ISN’T ALWAYS CARING
Sharing is a BIG thing for my little kindergartner this fall. But unfortunately, not everything is meant to be shared. Avoid sharing items that come in contact with other kids’ hands, faces and mouths: like straws, food, drinks, scarves, hats, and gloves.
8) PRACTICE HEALTHY HABITS
Kids cold and flu prevention begins with healthy habits. And this is an area where practice makes perfect. Each stage of childhood has areas where your child can focus on healthy habits such as how to:
  • Cough into your elbow
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Properly blow your nose
  • Hand washing, hand washing, hand washing!
  • Hygiene
