DISTANCE LEARNING: Monday, May 18 - Friday, May 22
This Month's Character Trait: Responsibility
This past Thursday we held our Chaparral Appreciation Parade. It was so emotional for me as I loved seeing so many of our students and families in person. As a CUBS staff, we wanted to show our appreciation to our school community of parents and students for the hard work and dedication they have given to us and each other all year, especially with distance learning. We can’t thank you enough and hope that you enjoyed the parade as much as we did. It was wonderful seeing so many people including neighborhood friends who have culminated but came out to cheer us, just the same.

When the teachers got together to decorate their cars, wearing masks and staying at least 6 feet away, they remarked on how great it was to see one another, and how much they miss being at Chaparral with all the staff, students, and families. We miss everyone so much. We are C.U.B.S, a Community Unified Building the Success of all Students. There is no doubt in my mind that Chaparral’s mission and vision statement is alive and, especially when times are challenging, we keep our students as our main focus.

In a recent letter to parents, Dr. Stepenosky reported that we are beginning to plan for the Fall of 2020. The situation continues to be fluid, and while we are in frequent contact with local and state health officials, we need to work on our options for school in the fall. Schools across the country are exploring models that allow smaller portions of the student body to attend school on a given date or time to minimize contact. This creates some semblance of normalcy for students and affords them important social connections, but at the same time, it requires more care outside of school than in a typical year.

To open school, we need to plan for all options over the summer and to prepare programs that provide the best education possible, considering all factors. As we plan, it will be helpful to have an initial idea of whether our families would prefer a distance-learning option or a structure where students attend school in smaller groups, for a portion of the day and/or week. Please make sure you have filled out this very short form to state your preference. If you have NOT completed the form, please CLICK HERE . All input received will remain anonymous. We hope to gather feedback from our community to gauge the level of interest as we plan carefully this summer for the future.

It was the highlight of my last two months to see the smiling faces and to hear the cheers of our CUBS at our parade. Our students are our focus, so please give us your feedback and fill out the form. We can’t wait to return to a normal school schedule as soon as it is safe to do so. Until then, continue to do what you can considering your family circumstances and keep following the health guidelines to keep you well. My staff and I will do the same. We look forward to planning the upcoming school year as we stay committed to our students and building their success.

With gratitude,

Stephanie Brazell, Principal

Chaparral Appreciation Parade
Oh my goodness! We are all just flooded with such emotion and feelings of connectedness after that incredible Chaparral Car Parade. Thank you Mrs. Brazell, teachers, and staff for decorating your cars and organizing and partaking in that incredible parade. And, a special thank you to LVUSD Board Member Mathy Wasserman and Director Steve Scifres for joining in the fun! This amazing parade is just what our Chaparral community needed after two months (and counting) of Distance Learning; this parade boosted our morale and helped us to feel connected again. It was so heartwarming to see and hear all the administrators, teachers, and staff honking their horns and shouting out greetings…the kids, and parents, felt the love! Thank you so very much, we are incredibly grateful! #CUBSStrong

Starting next week, I will be offering a weekly 30-minute Lunch/Bunch for students at each grade level. We will spend this time connecting and playing a game over lunch.

If your student is interested, fill out the Google Form on the ‘Parent’ tab of my counseling website or send me an email at jjamesson@lvusd.org .
Mrs. Mullenaux and I will be starting Mindful Mondays beginning next week. Each Monday, at 8:30am and 2:30pm one of us will lead a 15-20 minute mindfulness activity/practice for students and families.
