Hello Cuba Township. February is roaring in like a lion, but I am starting to see the sun rise a bit earlier, which is always good, and perhaps Punxsutawney Phil will bring us some good news and not see his shadow on Groundhog Day.
February is Black History Month, and I have always wondered how this celebratory month originated. Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian, scholar, and educator, is considered the "Father of Black History." He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), and in 1926, established "Negro History Week" to celebrate the contributions of African Americans to American history. This week was later expanded to become a month-long celebration. Carter G. Woodson was an extraordinary individual and was the second African American Ph.D. to graduate from Harvard after W.E.B. Du Bois. To learn more, visit the NAACP website.
We here at Cuba Township always try to deliver value for our residents at a reasonable cost. We recently completed our annual levy request and will finalize our budget in March for the next fiscal year. The General Township levy did not include an increase from last year. Our Road District levy included a 4% increase over last year primarily to accommodate inflationary pressures on the materials used to complete jobs. We also anticipate some cost savings from pension-related expenses. Regardless of home values rising or falling, controlling expenses is the key to stable property taxation. We will always think outside the box when it comes to optimizing the use of your tax dollars.
Firewood Friday is set for February 3rd and 17th this month. Saturday, March 25th is our next Shred Event at the Cuba Township Road District. This is always a popular event, and we look forward to seeing you this Spring. Lastly, mark your calendars for the 3rd annual Land We Love Run set for Saturday, July 1st. We look forward to an even bigger and better event this year.
Sincerely,
Chris Karam
