We continue to pray for improvement in our collective ability to prevent and respond to active shooters in our nation’s schools. The recent events in Uvalde, Texas, remind us to be alert and responsive to those who have stated bad intentions to harm themselves or others. Thank you to those who help keep our children safe in what should be the safest place of all – our schools.
The Uvalde school shootings gave some additional meaning to Memorial Day this year as we remembered those who have passed while defending our country. It was an honor to participate in the Lake Barrington Shores Memorial Day ceremony on May 30th. The Veterans of LBS deserve praise for their hard work and highly attended service, including the LBS band, which performed admirably. My message to those in attendance was, “One day (of remembrance) is not enough.” We will always remember those who served and were unable to return home to their families.
June is a time of change, and it is our final reminder that the new Lake County burning ordinance and refuse pickup arrangement are now in effect. We understand the rollout of the new refuse pickup arrangement may not have been conveyed clearly by previous Lake County communications, and we will continue to field calls and e-mails to ensure our unincorporated residents are utilizing the proper vendor and are aware of the regular pickup days moving forward.
We host our popular paper shredding event on June 18th from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Cuba Township Road District. It is always a good time to dispose of any sensitive documents securely, and we will be here to help.
You are likely aware that tax bills hit mailboxes in May, and we want to ensure you have the proper homestead exemptions for next tax season. We have included a link to a helpful homestead exemption pamphlet to guide you through the process. Our Assessor team stands ready to help.
We are looking forward to our July 2nd Land We Love 5k/10K race through Barrington Hills. Please register here to run or walk and enjoy some exercise during the Independence Day weekend. This year’s race proceeds will be donated to Folds of Honor foldsofhonor.org. Folds of Honor is a 501(c)3 that provides scholarships to family members of fallen and disabled service members. A few sponsorship opportunities remain for the race, and please e-mail Ant Simonian with your interest. Regardless of whether you plan on participating in the race, we will have the food pantry open for food donations and grocery store gift cards [$25 or less]. Please come in for a visit and enjoy the morning. We are also recycling old shoes as part of our Reuse a Shoe program. We will have a blue bin to deposit your old shoes where they will either be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
June is an opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day. As a grateful father of three school-aged children, I can attest to the hard work all of you fathers, grandfathers, and godfathers put into your families. Keep up the good work, rejoice and be glad for all your blessings.
All the best,
Chris Karam
