Kate Sinnott and husband Allan Martinez |
The January Customer of the Month is
Kate Sinnott
of Waterloo.
Kate remembers when Moo Roo opened at the corner of Kimball and Ridgeway, and going to get ice cream was - and still is! - a special treat.
When she and her husband moved back to the area in 2018, they started exclusively buying their milk, eggs, and meat at Hansen's.
"Our most-purchased product is definitely the milk. My husband loves cooking the beef, and I've been known to enjoy a bit of the Brownie Batter ice cream every now and then," she says.
"We buy Hansen's products because it's important to us to invest in local businesses and consume locally grown and responsibly raised animal products," she adds. "It's also just good quality!"
Thanks, Kate! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $30 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our
Facebook
and
Twitter
pages.

Cow of the Month
|
The January Cow of the Month knows how to continue her family tree, even if it has a few crazy branches.
Jazzie
is 6 years old, and has given birth 5 times -- all girls! They are Jubilee, Japan, Jova, Jeepers and Jimena.
They are a high-producing family, with Jazzie now producing 152 pounds of milk a day. That's 141 glasses! She also has a lifetime production of 135,000 pounds.
Herd manager Blake Hansen says working with this "J" family keeps life interesting. They are a bunch of crazy cows with a lot of heart.

Cooking with Hansen's
|
Wishing you a joyous start to 2020!
A friend of mine posted a picture of a Christmas Bisque over the holidays, and I thought I'd try my hand at one to share with you too! Of course, everything tastes better with bacon and cheese. My husband's first words were, 'This. Is. Fantastic!' as he savored every spoonful.
It is quite rich, and it doesn't take much to fill you up. You could always adjust the cream/milk ratio to your liking.

Shrimp & Bacon Bisque
Serves:
4-6
Prep time: 15 min
Bake time:
40-60 min
Ingredients
1 - 12 oz pkg Beeler's Bacon*
1 - 12 oz pkg tail-off medium shrimp
1 large onion**
1/4 bag baby carrots or 2 large carrots
All the leaves from a celery bunch plus 2 small stalks
1 Tbsp Hansen's Dairy Butter* (optional)
1 cup Hansen's Dairy Heavy Cream*
2 cups Hansen's 1% Milk*
Westby Parmesan Cheese (optional)*
Burnett Dairy or any shredded cheese for garnish*
* Items found in Hansen's Dairy Stores
** Items found in Hansen's Dairy Stores in season
Directions
- Cut bacon to make 1/2-inch chunks (I cut the whole slab of slices at once to save time).
- Finely chop onion, carrots, celery leaves and stalks (I used a food processor).
- Cook the bacon over medium heat in a 5-6 quart soup pot (about 10 minutes).
- Strain off most or all of the grease.
- Add butter (if using, or use 1 Tbsp of bacon grease) and all vegetables.
- Saute for 5-10 minutes. Add shrimp and cook another 5 minutes.
- Turn burner to low and add milk and cream.
- Stir occasionally as it warms, but do not bring to a rolling boil. Simmer on low heat until hot (180F), about 15-20 minutes. You could also let it simmer longer, letting the flavors mix.
- Ladle into bowls and top with shredded cheese, parmesan cheese and fresh cracked black pepper.
