December 2023 Edition

2023 has been a pivotal year for Cucamonga Station and its partners as they continue on the journey to make the Inland Empire the destination of choice for transportation, tourism, business and entertainment opportunities for Southern California and beyond.

When the Biden Administration announced on Dec. 8 in Las Vegas that $6 billion would be coming to California for two high-speed rail projects, the news offered a tremendous opportunity to focus on how Brightline West's high-speed passenger rail service between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas is one of several transportation initiatives that are transforming the Inland Empire.

2024 is looking bright as construction is anticipated to start on the Brightline West line with Cucamonga Station and the High Desert stations to follow.

Inland Empire leaders applaud ‘transformative’ high-speed rail project, shine spotlight on Cucamonga Station expansion

Inland Empire leaders shared with media how Cucamonga Station will help transform transportation connectivity in Southern California.

On Dec. 11, elected officials, business leaders and community stakeholders from across San Bernardino County gathered at Cucamonga Station to celebrate $3 billion in federal funding for the Brightline West Project and the far-reaching impact it will have on the region. Construction alone on the electrified high-speed rail project between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas will support more than 11,000 jobs each year and bring $5 billion in spending to the county.

The Brightline West high-speed rail project is a game-changer for the Inland Empire, bringing new and advanced economic development, mobility and career opportunities to Southern California’s most dynamic population center, said leaders from the City of Rancho Cucamonga, SBCTA, ONT, GOCAL, Omnitrans, Metrolink and San Bernardino County. The event, which was attended by regional media, put a spotlight on how Cucamonga Station partners are working collaboratively to transform the region through transportation projects. ONT continues yearlong roll with total passengers approaching magic 6 million, new programs, and honors

Ontario International Airport (ONT) has been on a yearlong roll as month-after-month data shows strong numbers for air travel. In October, more than 600,000 passengers traveled through the airport - this is the first time it has reached this number since the airport returned to local ownership in 2016. Based on current projections and published airline schedules, 343,626 passengers will travel through ONT during the 18-day holiday period between December 18 and January 4. This puts ONT on a solid path to reaching the magical 6 million passengers in 2023.

In November, ONT announced inspection wait times for arriving international passengers are being reduced significantly thanks to new technology that automates the process required for entry into the U.S. The Simplified Arrival process for international travel to the U.S. is operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and uses facial biometrics to automate the manual document checks required for admission into the country. The technology provides travelers with a touchless process that further secures and streamlines international arrivals. The enhanced process using biometrics only takes a few seconds. For more on Simplified Arrival, visit: www.cbp.gov/travel/biometrics.

Rounding out the latest airport news, the ONT+ digital pass program received a prestigious Turning Red Tape Into Red Carpet Award from the Inland Empire Economic Partnership (IEEP) for creating a program that allows community members to conveniently accompany or pick up families and friends at the gate, which was commonplace pre-9/11. Launched a year ago, community members can obtain an almost instantaneous digital visitor pass, which they can use - much like an airline ticket - to enter TSA checkpoints and access the post-security side of the passenger terminal. West Valley Connector Project to start construction soon

After celebrating a groundbreaking event in October, the San Bernardino County Transportation Agency (SBCTA) reported that construction will soon begin on the new 19-mile, 100% zero-emission Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line that will connect major destinations that include ONT, Victoria Gardens, Ontario Mills Mall, Toyota Arena and Cucamonga Station, and will be operated by Omnitrans. In total, there will be 21 stops between San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties.
