Hello Glastonbury!

Every year around this time, I promise myself that THIS is the year I figure out my finances and learn more about things like investing, the stock market, and retirement funds. Luckily, we have a number of resources at the Library that will help with that! First, WTML offers patrons free access to a number of financial and investment databases, such as Value Line and Morningstar Investment Research Center. For those of you who, like me, are new to investing, both databases offer quality financial data AND instruction on financial topics: Value Line has a section on their site for Investment Education, which includes Featured Commentary, Value Line University, and an FAQ, and Morningstar offers access to their “Morningstar Investing Classroom,” which provides basic knowledge about financial topics like the difference between Stocks and Bonds, courses on Retirement Planning and Social Security, and even tips on Sustainable Investing. LinkedIn Learning, our excellent online education resource, also has a number of financial literacy courses. Beyond the databases, our Libby and Hoopla Apps offer up a number of personal finance titles, including both books and magazines. We also continue to purchase new (physical) financial books and magazines as they are published, hoping to have something for every person looking to learn more. Finally, the Library frequently hosts finance-related lectures, classes, or conversations, such as the “Women and Money” roundtable planned for May 15. No matter what level of financial literacy you have, the library has a “wealth” of knowledge for you to access (pardon the pun!). And the best part? It’s all free with your library card.

Happy investing,

Amy

Overdue Fine FAQ

The Welles-Turner Memorial Library, with support from the Town Council and the Welles-Turner Memorial Library Board, is happy to announce that the library is no longer charging overdue fees for most library materials. We are proud to be following the practice of many libraries around the country and around the state, removing this potential barrier to library services.

Will everything be fine-free?

“Fine free” means that there will be no late charges on most materials checked out at WTML (due to a limited supply and a time-sensitive nature, late charges will still be charged on Museum Passes, Lucky Day Items, and Circulating Library Equipment/Things). The Library will still charge for lost and damaged items.

Will there still be due dates?

Every item checked out will still have a due date. We ask patrons to remember that someone else may be waiting for an item, so (as always) bring it back on time.

Won't this affect the library's budget?

Overdue fine revenue accounts for less than 0.4% of the library’s total budget, and due to increased digital usage, more built-in reminders, and more patron-friendly policies, that number was only going to go down.

Have other libraries eliminated late fines?

Yes! Over 130 libraries in Connecticut have already eliminated fines, and thousands of libraries across the country (and even the world!) have, too.
