"It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.” – John Steinbeck
As we move clocks forward this weekend, it's a great time to evaluate our sleep patterns (or lack thereof) and build healthier habits. I'm sure we all know we should make sleep a priority, but do we truly know how our lack of sleep affects our bodies and minds? I was quite unaware until I read the eye opening book, Why We Sleep. The author, Dr. Walker, is a sleep researcher and describes in depth what he has discovered in his research along with the findings numerous other studies. Turns out, that the age old advice to "sleep on it" is backed by science.
Just a few of the benefits of sleep:

  • Aids memory and prevents memory loss
  • Improves mental health
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Helps your brain process the day
  • Improves immune system function
  • Increases cancer fighting cells in your body
  • Lowers anxiety
  • Transfers items from short term memory to long term memory.
  • Repairs damage due to aging
Needless to say, if we could create a pill that could benefit our bodies in this way with no side effects, we'd all want a prescription! Sleep is your prescription for better health.
