St. Catharines Volunteer Feature: Friends of the Carousel

The Friends of the Carousel have been working with the City of St. Catharines since 1999 to restore and maintain the characters, chariots, scallops and shields on the historic Lakeside Park Carousel.

They are a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to take on this meticulous restoration work.

Since then, the Friends have restored all 79 characters, 4 chariots, the scallops and 20 shields and the painted garbage cans.  Over the years, they have also carved a completely new lion (a replica of a stolen Looff original) and a large "outside" horse.  They also carry out yearly restoration and maintenance on the carousel as needed; and throughout the winter, they work on a number of characters each year and carry out touch up work as a result of ridership of the carousel.

The Friends of the Carousel are currently part of the way through a second full restoration of the carousel characters.
