The Year of the Nurse and the Midwife - 2020

"If a nurse declines to do these kinds of things for her patient 'because it is not her business', I should say that nursing was not her calling." Florence Nightingale  (Mdrut, 2020)

Two hundred years after the birth of Florence Nightingale the World Health Organization honors nursing worldwide by celebrating nursing care and its impact on patients, families, organizations, and ultimately health care. Q:  Is it true that Magnet® journey organizations are required to have their transition to practice program(s) accredited by ANCC in order to successfully meet SE9?

A:  Having a nationally accredited transition to practice program is not a Magnet® requirement yet many believe it is beneficial since the document writing requirement is decreased. Currently there are 2 national accrediting bodies, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) with a third organization, Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) currently developing standards for accreditation as well.

Successfully meet SE9

Congratulations to  SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, St Louis, MO on their initial Magnet® designation. They wrote an extremely strong document that granted them a journey straight to site visit. In fact, their document was so strong their appraiser team identified 11 exemplars!  We are honored that they chose CHCM as their trusted partner on their journey to excellence.
Shared Governance Strategies that Work Workshop

In January we hosted another highly successful Shared Governance Strategies that Work workshop.  Participants included all levels of nursing leaders, shared governance council chairs/co-chairs, MPDs, and council members from organizations who are just implementing shared governance, those who were looking to strengthen their current structures, process and outcomes, to those who have had shared governance in nursing for many years and are now looking to expand to an interprofessional and whole organization shared governance culture.

Shared Governance Assessment™

How effective are your shared governance structures and processes? Have you identified significant variations in performance from council to council or unit council to unit council practices? Have some of your councils stalled? Regardless of how long shared governance has been in your organization take the time to assess where your councils are in comparison to best practices seen in high functioning shared governance councils.

Strengthen your organization's shared governance
