Message from the Mayor
It’s been an enjoyable week in Cumberland as we wrap up Youth Week activities, which are organised by young people for young people and celebrated right across the country.

I’m so proud that Council can provide opportunities for youth led events of this nature, to share ideas, attend live events, showcase talents and have young voices heard. This week saw Council collaborating with Auburn Youth Centre to host The World Traditional Games, which gave young people the opportunity to get active and experience sports from other cultures. Westarz Nite at Granville Town Hall celebrated the musical talents of young people in Cumberland and was hosted by our Youth volunteers. It was great to see what our young community members can achieve when given the pathways to do it and opportunities to actively participate in these events.

Next week, Council will be hosting the Ramadan Street Food Festival, which is set to light up our Auburn Town Centre. This will be a wonderful opportunity for us all to gather with loved ones, savour an exotic array of delicious cuisines and share in the Ramadan spirit
of peace and kindness. I encourage everyone to round up the family and head to Auburn this Saturday for this family friendly event.

A reminder that the registration of interest for the WestInvest Community Project Grants closes next week. This competitive round of funding will provide $1.6 billion dollars to help new and improved community facilities and local infrastructure across Western Sydney.

I encourage all non-government organisations, charitable organisations, community groups and other organisations to take advantage of this grant, check your eligibility and register your interest by completing the Registration of Interest Form (ROI) before 5pm, Thursday 21 April 2022. For guidance around the eligibility or application process, you can also call the Grants Team on 8757 9800 or visit the Smarty Grants website.

Lastly, we will be observing ANZAC Day on 25 April, which marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. There will be various ANZAC Day Dawn Services held across Cumberland and I encourage you to attend one of these services taking place, where we will commemorate the service men and women who fought so bravely for our freedom in this great country and to pay tribute to our fallen heroes as a community. Let us honour their legacy.

They shall never be forgotten.

WestWords Living Stories - Writing Workshop
Get a head start on your WestWords Living Stories writing entry with help from a renowed author.

James Roy will be running a free writing workshop for ages 16-18 to help young people hone their writing skills.

James Roy is the author of 35 books for young people, including several award-winners. He has a Master of Creative Writing degree from the University of Sydney, has presented creative writing workshops all over Australia and internationally, and is currently serving as chair of the children’s/young adult panel for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. 

Workshops will be held throughout April.

Ramadan Street Food Festival 2022 unveils a huge line up of stallholders

The Ramadan Street Food Festival is gearing up for a return to Auburn with a select line up of over 15 food vendors that are sure to delight your taste buds. We invite you to wander through the street and sample the array of exotic foods including; African fusion food, pizza, Turkish kofte rolls, falafel and kebabs, vegan Egyptian street food, souvlaki wraps and more.

When: 6pm to 12 midnight on Saturday 23 April 2022.
Where: Auburn Town Centre, Auburn Road (between Mary and Beatrice Streets), Auburn.
Cost: Free entry. You decide what to spend at restaurants, stalls and trucks.

Council Committees EOI

Council is seeking expressions of interest from people interested in participating in one of our Advisory Committees.

Help provide advice and make recommendations to Council on key topics and matters central to our community.

Committees will meet quarterly and consist of community members and nominated Councillors. Committee members from the community are volunteers and are not remunerated for their time.

Applications are now open for non-government organisations, charitable organisations, community groups and other organisations to apply for the WestInvest Community Project Grants.

Cumberland City Council's ClubGRANTS Scheme opens
Cumberland City Council’s ClubGRANTS scheme opens for applications this month to help fund not-for-profit organisations’ community projects.

Schools, local government and not-for-profit community based, plus incorporated organisations with an Australian Business Number (ABN) are welcome to apply.
 
The program works by allowing registered clubs with gaming machine profits of over $1 million to apply for a tax rebate (of 1.85%). The rebate is used to help fund projects in the areas of community welfare and social services, community development, community health services and employment assistance activities.
 
Applications close at 4pm on Thursday 28 April.
