This is always a sight to see -- a Red & White Holstein giving birth to Black & White Holstein twins! The mama, Bright-Red, had a surprise in store for us when she calved in November. Even better, they were both girls! We named them Bumble and Bee. :)

Should you avoid milk during colds and flu?

You know that old adage about avoiding milk during colds and flu? Turns out that is likely unnecessary. The current body of research indicates that milk and other dairy foods do not increase mucus production.

Results of another study by the same research group suggests the "milk mucus effect" may stem from how milk feels in the mouth and throat rather than any direct effect on symptoms.

Milk is an important source of nine essential nutrients our bodies need to support health and is also hydrating, so don't feel the need to avoid milk while fighting those winter colds! Read more about the topic here.

Customer of the Month


	Jordan Daniels

The February Customer of the Month is Jordan Daniels of La Porte City.

Jordan usually shops at the Waterloo store, but remembers her first experience with Hansen's milk and butter when her dad brought it home.

"It was like nothing I'd ever had, and it tasted amazing," she said. "Once he told me you had ice cream, it was game over for me - I was going weekly! The Butter Pecan ice cream is my absolute favorite!"

Cow of the Month

Our February Cow of the Month is the best looking young cow in the herd.

Scarlet celebrates her golden birthday on Feb. 3. She has given birth to one bull and one heifer (named Sumo).

Scarlet scores extremely high on the Holstein cow classification spectrum for body type. She scored 89 points, which is the highest number a 2-year-old cow can achieve. She is off to a great start!

Scarlet's milk also has a high butterfat percentage - 4.4. So she looks great, is nice to work with and provides tasty dairy products!

Cooking with Hansen's

These heart hand pies are a lovely treat for Valentine's Day. The recipe calls for strawberry jam, but they can be made with any flavor of jam or pie filling to suit your tastes. Starred ingredients can be purchased from Hansen's Dairy stores. Of course you could buy the pie crust already made, but then you wouldn't get to use Hansen's butter!

Mini Heart Pies

Prep time: 45 minutes

Bake time: 12 minutes

Yield: About 14 pies

INGREDIENTS

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup softened Hansen's butter*
1/3 cup shortening
8 tablespoons cold water
1/2 cup strawberry jam
1 beaten egg*
Coarse sugar
Red sanding sugar (optional for more festive look)
3" heart-shaped cookie cutter

DIRECTIONS

Stir together flour and salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter and shortening until pieces are pea-size.
Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the water over part of the mixture; gently toss with a fork. Push moistened dough to side of bowl. Repeat, using 1 tablespoon water at a time, until all the dough is moistened. Divide in half. Form each half into a ball.
Place racks in the upper third and center of the oven, then preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
Place the first pie crust on a well-floured surface and roll into a 1/8-inch thickness. With a 3-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut 12 to 14 hearts from the rolled crust. Transfer the hearts to baking sheet and place in the refrigerator, then roll and cut the second crust. After cutting both crusts, you should have 24 to 28 hearts total.
Place 1 heaping teaspoon of strawberry jam in the center of half your hearts.
Gently stretch each of the remaining hearts with your fingers to make them slightly larger, then set them on top of the filling-topped hearts. With your fingers, gently press the edges together. With the blunt end of a wooden skewer, press dots around the edges of the hearts to seal, then use a small knife to cut two small vents in the top of each heart. Brush the tops of each complete heart with the beaten egg, then sprinkle with coarse sugar or red sanding sugar. Repeat to use up all pie crust.
Place the hearts 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 12 minutes, until golden and bubbling, rotating the pans' position half way through. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
