Historical Tidbit: George E. Keith
How one human can make a difference: George Eldon Keith was a pillar in Brockton and possibly one its most valuable citizens in the 1880s.
Way back in 1662, the Keith family migrated to Bridgewater and James Keith became the first minister. For the next 188 years, the Keith family was filled with shoe makers and inventors.
February 8th, 1850 George Eldon Keith was born in North Bridgewater Mass. which would later become Brockton. George Keith took to the family skill of shoe making and in July of 1874 invested $1,000 into what would become an international business.
Keith named his financial force the Walk Over Shoe company. From a family of shoemakers, Keith prided himself on his company's treatment of workers. Keith provided discounted lunches during the workday, emergency funds for workers, and most importantly the Walk Over Club.
The club consisted of 13 acres of land covered in amenities for workers and is now the WalkOver Commons Apartments, 100 Perkins Ave. The club was $2 a year for membership and allowed for workers to unwind, exercise, relax, and learn. Cooking to pottery classes, pools, gyms, tennis courts, bowling, pool... if you could think it - it'd be available to you at the Walk Over Club.
George Keith also gave to the Brockton community as a whole. When Brockton became a city in 1882 he was on the first city council, he also was a park commissioner for years, an active member of the South Congregational Church (now where the Walgreens on the corner of Main and South St. stands), and the 1st President of the Brockton Young Man's Christian Association ( the YMCA).

Climate Can Do: Overconsumption and Sustainable Practices
What Is Overconsumption?
Overconsumption is the excessive consumption or use of something. Without change we could eventually run out, or create more than we can dispose of.
How Can We Help?
Live sustainably, make lifestyle choices that help you and the planet. Small changes make a big impact:
*Walk, bike or take public transportation whenever possible!
*Consider alternatives to single use items:
- A reusable shopping bag.
- Skip the plastic bottles; all sorts of reusable bottles can be found in metal, glass and recycled plastic
- Replace Saran Wrap with wraps made from beeswax, cotton, and tree oil that keep food fresher and can be reused repeatedly.
- Use reusable towels instead of paper towels.
*Consider eating 2 or 3 meatless dinners / week:
Don’t throw away leftovers; eating leftovers will help you avoid food waste and save you money. Freeze pre-made meals for handy eating later.
*Rather than replacing, repair.
Do not automatically discard broken items when they break. Instead, try repairing it. Using this method can save you money and reduce landfill waste. Repair shops and Youtube Videos are readily available to help you fix things.
*Join Buy Nothing.
With Buy Nothing, you can get rid of unwanted things around your house and get things you need for free. As their motto states “Buy Nothing. Share Everything,” a sustainable living app aimed at the community.
*Shop local.
By shopping locally, you reduce the impact of transportation on the environment and support your local economy.

Human beings are hard-wired for curiosity.
“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”
~ E. E. Cummings
"As long as you’re interested in people and things, that curiosity propels you forward.”
~ Joanna Coles
“Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply. We listen for what’s behind the words.”
~ Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
“Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.”
~ Richard Feynmann
