Monponsett's Clam Hut

It is hard to imagine today, with 24 hour fast food restaurants, just how limited your options concerning "fast-food" were during the late 1940s. I remember sometime during the summer of 1947, the "Pizza-Pie" truck came through Monponsett about twice a week around 7:00 on summer nights. Just as we had the "Ice Cream Man" with his musical jingle truck, so too did the adults or "grown-ups" wait for the "Pizza-Pie" truck.

One of our neighbors who served in World War ll, told us of the wonderful "cheese-tomato pie" which he had sampled in Italy during the war. My father therefore bought one of the anticipated pies and I, who always equated "pie" with something sweet, nearly gagged on my first ever slice!

During the spring of 1948, a small white frame building, about the size of a small house, was constructed a few feet aside the Lake Theater. Al and Rose Cintrella took a long term lease on the building, and in the early summer of 1948, the Clam Hut opened for business. Because the lakes drew a large summer-crowd, business in Monponsett was geared to the summer season. Therefore, both the Clam Hut and Lake Theater were seasonal businesses, and operated from about early May to the end of October.

I remember the evening the Clam Hut opened. The first customer was Frank Purpura, and Al Cintrella proudly had the first dollar, which Mr. Purpura paid for a box of clams, framed under glass, and it stayed on the wall behind the counter for years. I remember my father buying me an ice cream cone (first time I tasted butter crunch ice cream), and to this day remember the creamy consistency.

~Respectfully submitted, Jim Duffy

Climate Can Do:  Overconsumption and Sustainable Practices

What Is Overconsumption?

Overconsumption is the excessive consumption or use of something. Without change we could eventually run out, or create more than we can dispose of.

How Can We Help?

Live sustainably, make lifestyle choices that help you and the planet. Small changes make a big impact:

*Walk, bike or take public transportation whenever possible!

*Consider alternatives to single use items:

  •  A reusable shopping bag.
  • Skip the plastic bottles; all sorts of reusable bottles can be found in metal, glass and recycled plastic
  • Replace Saran Wrap with wraps made from beeswax, cotton, and tree oil that keep food fresher and can be reused repeatedly.
  • Use reusable towels instead of paper towels.

*Consider eating 2 or 3 meatless dinners / week:

Don’t throw away leftovers; eating leftovers will help you avoid food waste and save you money. Freeze pre-made meals for handy eating later.

*Rather than replacing, repair.

Do not automatically discard broken items when they break. Instead, try repairing it. Using this method can save you money and reduce landfill waste. Repair shops and Youtube Videos are readily available to help you fix things.

*Join Buy Nothing.

With Buy Nothing, you can get rid of unwanted things around your house and get things you need for free. Their motto “Buy Nothing. Share Everything,” a sustainable living app.

*Shop local.

By shopping locally, you reduce the impact of transportation on the environment and support your local economy.

Human beings are hard-wired for curiosity.

“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”

~ E. E. Cummings

"As long as you’re interested in people and things, that curiosity propels you forward.”

~ Joanna Coles

“Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply. We listen for what’s behind the words.”

~ Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

“Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.”
