PATF Releases 2017 Annual Report: Making a Positive Impact on Lives One Loan at a Time

The latest accomplishments of the Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Foundation (PATF) were highlighted at a press conference Tuesday, May 23, hosted by Chief Executive Officer, Susan Tachau, at the Capitol Rotunda at 12:00 p.m. PATF continues to achieve outstanding outcomes for the individuals with disabilities and older Pennsylvanians who have been able to purchase the assistive technology (AT) devices and services they need. The program leverages a small amount of public funding into a large number of loans that strengthen our communities. In addition, the repayment of loans from past borrowers provides funding for future borrowers. Remarkably, even though PATF makes many non-traditional loans, its loan default rate is under 1%, which is significantly better than the industry average of about 10% for traditional lenders.

The organization released its 2016 - 2017 Annual Report that contains information on how PATF's financing made it possible for 229 people with disabilities in Pennsylvania to acquire the assistive technology (AT) they need in the last year. The Report, available at the event, also describes the tremendous growth PATF has experienced in the past 15 years, and the types of assistive technology that more than 3,008 people have purchased with their loans since the organization was founded. The Report also profiles the stories of borrowers whose lives have been impacted by the assistive technology they were able to purchase.

Get Outside! Accessible Trails and Beaches
Summer is nearly here and we can't wait to get outside! We've compiled a few helpful websites so that you can find accessible trails in Pennsylvania and even a few accessible beaches "down the shore" (in New Jersey).

Remember, that despite any designations the following sites give for a particular trail, it is always wise to call or write ahead to determine trail difficulty and current trail conditions.

Trails and Parks
  • TrailLink: A list of trails, organized by state, of wheelchair accessible trails, along with in-depth descriptions of each trail.
  • Accessible Nature: Another list of trails, organized by state, that include those accessible to wheelchairs, those not accessible to wheelchairs but that provide easy walking, and those accessible to individuals with low vision or who are blind.
  • United Spinal Association Tech Guide: A list of organizations that support access to trails, paths and parks across the U.S. and beyond.
  • Accessibleplayground.net: A list of accessible and inclusive playgrounds across the country by state.
Beaches
  • Easter Seals of New Jersey: A helpful article that outlines how to make a day at the Jersey shore accessible.
  • Atlantic City: All you need to know about an accessible beach day in Atlantic City from how to access the beach, where to borrow free adaptive beach surf chairs, and where the ADA compliant restrooms are.
  • Island Beach State Park: An article about another accessible New Jersey beach that also provides beach wheelchairs, some of which are even outfitted for surf fishing.
