Week of December 16-22, 2024 | |
The third Sunday of Advent has the name Gaudete Sunday, and with the rose colored candle, it reminds us that the proximity to Christmas is a reason for joy and rejoicing. As such, those words appear in the prayers and readings for this Sunday. The Ring Ceremony of last Sunday, the various Christmas sweaters and shirts being worn this week, the concerts and the upcoming Greccio are all reasons to put a smile on one’s face, but more deeply, I trust they help us find a sense of peace and joy in our hearts. Ultimately, it is the realization that Jesus came as a Redeemer and Savior—meaning he came to the world because we each need to be redeemed and saved—that can give us that peace and joy. It’s not trying to look at the world through “rose-colored” glasses, but trying to see our world and our lives through the eyes of faith.

We have had many joyful celebrations these last few weeks. We enjoyed assemblies during school showcasing the talents of our choral and instrumental music students prior to their regular concerts. The Class of 2026 received their school rings and officially joined the ranks of upperclassmen. We gathered as a community for Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. In all of these ways, we enjoyed the brotherhood that is central to our school’s identity. I must say, too, that I am so very proud of our students during these moments.
Please consider celebrating with us one more time on December 15 at 7:00 pm as we celebrate the Franciscan tradition of Greccio. This is a special moment on the Curley calendar and is helpful during our advent preparations.
As we enter Midterm Exam Week, please read through the many reminders, particularly those regarding the exam week schedule and expectations. We have set aside review days that stretch into Monday. Please assist your son in his time management leading up to each exam so that he is preparing at home for these important assessments.
Looking ahead, we have planned an important session for our Curley parents. On January 29, at 6:30 pm, we will have a special presentation planned for parents on The Teenage Brain. Please look for the announcements regarding a prominent expert on the topic who will share insights to help us better understand the development of our sons. We hope you will join us for this hour-long presentation that connects many of the topics our counseling office presents to your sons during their time at Curley.

Blackfriars' Theatre
We are now just days away, if not even hours, of being able to make the announcement concerning this year's Spring Musical scheduled for the weekend of March 14 -16. Due to contract regulations with Music Theatre International (hint number #1), we cannot publicly announce the show for next season (hint #2), until all the paperwork submitted with a required security deposit has been officially accepted and approved. Once the approval from New York (hint #3) has been confirmed, we will be announcing the audition dates for early January just after the Christmas break, probably the week of January 5th. Look for this information soon on the Curley website as well as the Blackfriars' Facebook pages, as Blackfriars prepares for a big hit (hint #4) in March.

Semper Fi Scholarship
The Semper Fi Scholarship is open to Catholic students at Curley. The scholarship process involves the completion of an application, along with supporting documents from the parish and the pastor that evidence a commitment by the applicant and his family to living their Catholic faith. Essays from the parent and student are part of the application.
A student may receive this scholarship in any year of his education, and it is renewable on an annual basis. A committee, comprised of the donor and Archbishop Curley High School administration, will determine the annual awards.
The applicant is responsible for meeting the deadline of January 8, 2025, and having all related materials submitted by that date. Applications, in print or digital form, may be obtained in the Main Office from Mrs. Raynor.

From the College Counseling Office |
Attention Class of 2025 Parents
The FAFSA is now open and your senior can go HERE to start his FAFSA application. The senior begins the application and then enters his parent/guardian information that will push something to you to fill out. The senior AND his parent/guardian each need their own FSA ID in order to sign your portion.
Please also check if your student applied to a school that requires the CSS profile. A list of those schools can be found HERE. That application is open and you can submit that now.
All seniors should now have their 4 year college applications submitted. If your son has not yet submitted all of his 4 year college applications in, they must be done ASAP. Please make sure they mark it in SCOIR when they have applied so we send the additional materials. All students are encouraged to see their college counselor if they need any help.
Those looking to apply to a 2 year school, will be called in to the counseling office in February. The application for CCBC, HCC and AACC does not open until February so we will help students through that process when it opens! They will need their social security number.
Mrs. Berrigan will be on maternity leave from January to June, please reach out to Mrs. Berkey at jberkey@archbishopcurley.org if you have any questions!
