Week of January 13-19, 2025

From the President

This has certainly been a quick school week! On the Church calendar this weekend we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, and next Sunday’s Gospel has Jesus changing the water into wine at the Cana wedding. Including Epiphany Sunday, it is three Sundays of Jesus being made known to the world, jumping from when he was a small child, to the beginnings of his public ministry. It is also when we move from the Christmas Season to the “Season of the Year,” which may sound rather dull, but is really where most of life takes place. In all of these days and weeks the Lord walks with us, and we should never hesitate to seek inspiration, to whisper a prayer for assistance, and to be heartened by that relationship we have as children of God and sisters and brothers of the Lord Jesus.

From the Principal

Since a young age, I have had an interest in the US Presidents. When traveling I visit their birthplaces and burial sites. I read biographies and watch documentaries. I drag my family to presidential sites on Presidents’ Day, which I know they secretly enjoy! This week we bundled up to wait in line at the U.S. Capitol as a family to pay our spects to President Jimmy Carter. It was a moving experience.

I think I like this topic in part because of those stories in which a president has overcome great challenges to reach that high office. How can a peanut farmer in rural Georgia find his way to the White House? Political views aside, we can point to personal characteristics of positive ambition, self-discipline, intelligence, and work ethic. These are all attributes to be admired. President Carter was also a faithful Christian, whose religious beliefs shaped his actions and interactions. That combination makes him particularly interesting to me.

These are attributes that I hope Curley will encourage in your son - the aspiration to achieve to his potential, the self-discipline to be the best version of himself, the academic ability to be an engaged critical thinker, the drive to do each job well even when requiring real effort, and ultimately the desire to have a relationship with God, his maker.

Snow Day Count

We have used two of the three school days built into the school calendar. If we accumulate one more snow day, then subsequent snow days will pivot to virtual days. Details of those virtual days will be communicated after the next snow day, but can also be found on pages 18-19 of the Student/Family Handbook: https://www.archbishopcurley.org/studentlife/handbook/.

Nite at The Races

A Nite at The Races is quickly approaching on January 25! There are a few tickets left, but time is running out to get yours, and to also purchase horses. The deadline is Thursday, January 17, or when we sell out. Tickets are $35 per person and horses are $25. Horse race winners receive $125. Winners are not required to be present at the event to participate so you can support Curley’s Performing Ensembles by purchasing a horse. Tickets can be purchased HERE or contact Ed Lawrence (elawrence@archbishopcurley.org) with any questions and to purchase tickets and/or horses.

Deadlines Approach: Semper Fi and Knights of Columbus State Scholarships

With the weather delays we have experienced, the deadline for the Semper Fi Scholarship applications (both new and renewal) has been extended to Friday, January 17, 2025. The Maryland Knights of Columbus Scholarships have an absolute deadline of being received (by mail at their office) by February 1st.

Semper Fi Scholarship

The Semper Fi Scholarship is open to Catholic students at Curley. The scholarship process involves the completion of an application, along with supporting documents from the parish and the pastor that evidence a commitment by the applicant and his family to living their Catholic faith. Essays from the parent and student are part of the application.

A student may receive this scholarship in any year of his education, and it is renewable on an annual basis. A committee, comprised of the donor and Archbishop Curley High School administration, will determine the annual awards.

The applicant is responsible for meeting the deadline of January 17, 2025, and having all related materials submitted by that date. Applications, in print or digital form, may be obtained in the Main Office from Mrs. Raynor.

Knights of Columbus High School Scholarships

The Maryland State Council of the Knights of Columbus is the sponsor of several high school scholarships, some for children of members (the Frederick M. Gossman Memorial Scholarships), and others for Catholic students in general (the William J. O’Brien Memorial Scholarships). The awards may be applied to tuition only for the 2025-26 school year. The application period is now open, and all applications must be received in their entirety by the Scholarship Committee no later than February 1, 2025. Scholarship applications are available HERE. If you have a problem accessing the information, Fr. Donald can get you an application packet

From the Assistant Principal of Academics

I hope that each of you had a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. The end of the 2nd quarter is Friday, January 17th. Please check your son’s grades and reach out to their teachers if you have any questions or concerns. This also means the 3rd quarter begins Tuesday, January 21, which offers the opportunity for continued success or a fresh start. Please let me know if you have any questions or if your son needs any assistance.

We will be hosting world renowned Neurologist, Dr. Frances Jensen, to speak to the students on Wednesday, January 29 on the topic “The Teenage Brain”. There will also be a parent session that same evening. Please review the flyer below and RSVP if you are able to join us.

Blackfriars' Theatre

The auditions have been held, and the cast list is being finalized, and the first rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, January 12, 2025. It's time to start on our Spring Musical, Damn Yankees. This year is the 70th anniversary of the original Broadway production, and with our own baseball team in Baltimore playing better after so many disappointing seasons, it's a good year to celebrate the national pastime. Blackfriars' could still use a few more young ladies to join the cast as this is definitely a guy driven show. If you know of any family or friends who have high school age girls that may be interested in being in the show, please pass along the information. They wouldn't have many required rehearsals to attend, mostly those we have on Sunday afternoons, until we get close to the show performances. The show dates are March 14 through 16, 2025. On Saturday, March 15, we will have our Dinner Theatre prior to the evening performance beginning at 5:00 pm. Tickets for the Dinner Theatre will go on sale beginning Monday, January 13, at a cost of $45 per person and tables of eight for just $325. This includes hors d'oeuvres, open bar, and a sit-down dinner with reserved seating in the theatre. Dinner Theatre patrons get the best seats in the house on Saturday night. To order your Dinner Theatre tickets go HERE or you can contact Ed Lawrence directly at elawrence@archbishopcurley.org.

From the College Counseling Office

Attention Class of 2025 Parents

The FAFSA is now open and your senior can go HERE to start his FAFSA application. The senior begins the application and then enters his parent/guardian information that will push something to you to fill out. The senior AND his parent/guardian each need their own FSA ID in order to sign your portion.

Please also check if your student applied to a school that requires the CSS profile. A list of those schools can be found HERE. That application is open and you can submit that now.

All seniors should now have their four-year college applications submitted. If your son has not yet submitted all of his four-year college applications, he should plan to meet with Mrs. Berkey now. Please make sure they mark it in SCOIR when they have applied so all supporting documents can be sent.  All students are encouraged to see Mrs. Berkey if they need any help.

Seniors who are interested in applying to a 2 year school should listen to morning announcements and look for emails from College Counseling about upcoming admissions events that will happen here on campus at Curley.  The application for CCBC, HCC and AACC does not open until February so we will help students through that process when it opens! They will need their social security number.

Mrs. Berrigan is currently on maternity leave. She and her husband welcomed a healthy baby boy on December 21, 2024. She will return in early June. Please reach out to Mrs. Berkey at jberkey@archbishopcurley.org if you have need anything.

The packet is due on Monday, March 10, 2025.
