What Happens When You Bring Your Germs To a Karaoke Show
You love to sing and there's a karaoke show tonight at your favorite restaurant. You already know what you want to have for dinner and you know that several friends intend to be there tonight. There are 2 new songs that you want to sing, you've worked hard to learn them and tonight is the night to show what you can do with them.

Unfortunately you aren't feeling your best. Your throat is a bit dry today, maybe you've been practicing too much the past few nights. As the day progresses you notice that your energy level is low but you blame that on the overtime you worked last week.

On your way home after work your nose gets stuffy and your eyes feel dry but you're sure it's the air conditioning in your car causing this discomfort. When you get home you start sneezing and you can't seem to clear your throat when you start rehearsing your new songs for tonight's karaoke show.

You jump in the shower, get dressed for the show and head out to the show still not feeling your best, but hoping that a good meal and a cold drink will clear up your minor ailments. You arrive to find the KJ has just finished setting up equipment and you sign up to sing. You feel lucky because there are only a few singers who arrived ahead of you, and you know you'll get to sing early and often.

Your turn is coming up after one more singer but now your nose is running so you rush to the rest room to grab some tissues and blow your nose. Your name is announced as you leave the rest room and you eagerly walk over to the stage and grab a microphone. The song starts and you have an uncontrollable tickle in your throat and begin to sneeze. Okay no problem, the KJ restarts the song for you because you missed the intro.

You start to sing but your throat is not clear and you struggle to stay in tune. You keep singing but your voice cracks when you try to hit the high notes and you can't help but sneeze halfway through the song. It's a total disaster, a nightmare and your confidence crumbles with each passing moment.

You sneeze again and your hair starts falling out. All of a sudden you notice your hands are covered with huge red bumps and you see concern in the eyes of the audience. The KJ is looking at you with fear in his eyes and you feel a terrible urge to start chewing on his hand as you give him the microphone. The crowd is screaming as you bite his finger and turn to them while chewing it obscenely.

Everyone is running out of the building including your friends and you don't know exactly what is happening but you're sure something is wrong. You run into the rest room as you hear police sirens in the distance. You look in the mirror and you see someone else. It's not you, it can't be because it's a zombie monster starring back at you with blood dripping from its nose, eyes and mouth.

The police arrive and take you away and life will never be the same again.

Okay, so you didn't turn into a zombie and all that stuff about losing your hair and the blood isn't true either but you did spread your germs to other singers and you didn't sing very well so next time stay home when you're sick.

Totally Twisted Karaoke
But It's On The Radio!!
by Leah Blakely - Totally Twisted Karaoke™
As a working KJ, I am constantly asked for the newest songs to sing at karaoke.  At Totally Twisted Karaoke™, we strive to always have the newest releases for you to sing as soon as they become available!  However, not every song you hear on the radio is available in a karaoke format.  Most of the big name manufacturers like Sound Choice, Chartbuster, DK, Legends, and Music Maestro have gone out of business due to piracy.  There are still several companies who are currently manufacturing karaoke songs for you to sing, but it takes them a while to get the songs produced.  Karaoke songs come in different formats, like CD+G, or MP3+G, which are special formats which include the music track and the graphics that show the words on the screen for you.  In order to create this, they first have to have a band record the music track "in the style of" the original artist.  The music tracks you hear on karaoke songs are not the original artist!  Then they produce the graphic file and they are usually zipped together in a file that the KJ's karaoke software can read and display for you.  It usually takes a few weeks to even a few months to have a new release come out for karaoke.  Sometimes its faster, depending on how hot the song is, but please be patient!!  We love your special requests, and we do our best to get them for you, but due to piracy issues, we have to wait until they are LEGALLY AVAILABLE FOR US TO PURCHASE!  We can't play songs off of YouTube or from your CD+G disk.  We have to have a legally purchased copy of the song on our computer before we can play it for you at a public karaoke show.  So just because you heard it on the radio, does not mean that its available for karaoke just yet.. we will do our best to get it for you as soon as it becomes available!

Favoritism at Karaoke Shows
I've posted several articles along this subject, but here it is again.  I recently attended a karaoke show in Ft. Worth and was very disappointed to find that in 3 hours, I was only called up to sing one time. The host had a group of favorites who each sang about 6 times each, and also were allowed to sing a solo and a duet song back to back while the rest of us waited for our single turn.  It makes for a bad experience at karaoke when you wait and wait and never get called to sing when you see other singers get 4 or 5 turns in a single rotation.  This is why we have a "fairness policy" at Totally Twisted Karaoke™.  You will NEVER be treated unfairly at one of our shows.  period.
Leah Blakely - Totally Twisted Karaoke

Singers who regularly attend karaoke shows usually want to sing as many times as possible. Some singers look for ways to get to sing an extra song or two when the rotation is over populated or the audience is huge. Singing with another person on their turn is one way, or signing up to sing using a different name is another way. Neither way is fair to others in attendance.

Some singers will resort to bribery or use some excuse to move up on the singers list. People might say "I have to leave soon, can you move me up to the top of the list?" Or, "If I give you 5 bucks can I sing next?"

Parents might say "My son has to go to bed soon so can he sing again now?"
Some singers will repeatedly ask the host "When am I up to sing again?" Some do this 5 minutes after they sang and there are 30 other singers ahead of them.

Singers who arrive at shows late often want to be put in at the top of the list. They feel they deserve some "extra" favoritism simply because they came to the show, or because they feel they are better singers than others in attendance. Singers who arrive late should expect to wait a reasonable amount of time before singing because those who arrived early are also patiently waiting.

Karaoke hosts would like to show favoritism to their best supporters or good friends but doing this would cause other singers to become unhappy with being treated unfairly. KJs who let their friends sing more than everyone else often lose their shows as a result.

Occasionally management will ask the host to allow their friend to sing immediately. This is never a good policy and usually annoys other singers. When the KJ projects the line up on a large screen TV, everyone can see the singers who are scheduled to come up soon. Many people get offended when several singers are moved up ahead of them and may look to find another show to sing at in the future.

It's never wise to show favoritism to anyone at a show and most karaoke hosts try not to commit this type of mistake. Singers have a choice of shows to attend and can sing at a crowded show where they might receive more audience response, or at a show that allows them to sing many more times because there are very few people attending.

Imagine arriving at the doctor's office and asking to be attended to before all the other patients because you want to go home and watch your favorite TV show. Or imagine asking the person at the checkout to allow you to move to the front of the line so you can go home and relax.

Favoritism is not fair and should never be expected, even at a karaoke show!

Why Enter A Karaoke Contest?
Seriously, why enter a karaoke contest? The most obvious answer is that people just love to compete. Whether it's sports, business, keeping up with the Jones's or a simple game of Monopoly, people love the challenge of pitting their skills, intelligence , or talent against others. Karaoke singers who enjoy showing their vocal skills often feel they are competing with other performers so it's natural that these singers would enjoy a karaoke contest. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Some people enter karaoke contests every time one is available. Some singers search for contests and travel great distances for an opportunity to compete against other talented performers simply for the excitement. While others enter karaoke contests with the hope of winning prize money, and still others simply want the glory of winning. But the most talented singers or performers don't always end up on top and regardless of who wins, someone will always feel it should have been them instead.

Problems arise when performers feel the contests are not fair for one reason or another and often they have some valid reason for their feelings. When a contest is judged by one person some will feel that there was some bias based on friendship or other personal reasons. If a contest winner is determined solely by audience response, many contestants feel that talent was overlooked for popularity. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it's the same with talent.

Before entering a karaoke contest, people should find out how the contest will be judged and determine if they can perform well enough based on that criteria to have a chance to win.

In most cases only one person will win and while there might be second and third place winners, many others will feel they were the best and some will feel cheated. Karaoke is meant to be fun and anyone entering a karaoke contest should do so for the fun of competing and should always understand that the winners are chosen by the judge's opinion, not by a statistic or fact. Everyone who enters a karaoke contest is a winner because they had the courage to enter and the enjoyment of participating and competing.

Life and karaoke contests are not always fair, it's up to everyone to make the best of every opportunity and have fun doing so.
