How Jesus and the Universalists Got It Right

(In Person & Zoom)

For a long time, both Unitarians and Universalists stayed within the Christian fold as dissenters, radically challenging its orthodoxy.

Then many of them just abandoned their work as reformers and became deserters. What does this history of our Christian heritage teach us today as we look back at our UU journey within, and then at some distance from, Christianity?

Speaker: Rev Jay Atkinson

Worship Leader: Mindy Scherr

We are a Welcoming Congregation!

Would you like to be part of the Greeter Team that helps makes that happen? This is a great way to meet people – long standing Members and first time visitors.

You can provide that welcoming presence which makes such a difference! We’ll show you "the ropes" and help you feel comfortable in the role providing additional coverage about 1 Sunday/month.

Want to sing at our Christmas Eve service?

Join the Christmas Choir! It's a joyful and beautiful way to contribute to the worship experience. The service is early, 6-7 pm.

We'll be rehearsing after church on Sundays in November and December, and of course on Dec 24th at 3pm. Choir members are all invited and anyone else who'd like to sing with us, just for this event, will be warmly welcomed. We're also looking for volunteer musicians. Talk to Gail for details.

A light soup and bread dinner will be provided for Singers, Instrumentalists and Christmas Elf Volunteers around 5:30 pm on Dec 24th.

Let me know if you want to be a part of our wonderful Christmas Eve service. It will be beautiful and magical, and the more voices and instruments we have the better.

A Call for Hospitality Help

Please lend a hand so the hospitality program can continue! Additional help will be needed to provide food for our after service lunch. We are going back to a previous system of food production so our lunches can continue. We have divided up the congregation (members and friends) into four parts.

If your surname falls in this range, please bring some food on the given Sunday.

(A-D)  First Sundays

(E-M)  Second Sundays

(N-S)  Third Sundays (THIS SUNDAY, Oct 15th, is a third Sunday)

(T-Z)   Fourth Sundays

Fifth Sundays will be something minimal

It doesn't need to be fancy or a large quantity-banana bread, cheese plate, fruit, bagel halves & cream cheese, nuts, veggies & dip, tuna salad or baked beans are examples. If you are taking part in the service or working the sound system....you get an automatic pass for that Sunday-you have enough to do!

If you would, please bring a bowl or dish to serve your food....that makes the clean-up faster. Please put your name on your dish, though, so you get it back. Many thanks to all who brought food to share last week!

Please send Jeanie Trigg a text or email with any questions or suggestions. jeanietrigg@yahoo.com   920-915-0966

Invitation to all who are concerned about the Climate Crisis, but may feel the problem is too complex for ordinary people to tackle:

Sun., Oct. 29th, after the service, Pauline Seales from the Santa Cruz Climate Action Network will guide us for an exciting interactive SOLUTIONS session. We’ll use the MIT simulation “En-ROADS” with lots of discussion. Please bring a LAPTOP if you are able.

Two or three people can share one computer. You will be manipulating 18 different climate solutions and seeing how they interact and combine. Pauline is a trained En-Roads facilitator whose guidance will empower you to advocate for effective actions to confront the climate emergency.

It is not required to sign up in advance, but Surrey Kent requests that you send her an email (surreykent@baymoon.com) if you plan to participate. (831)345-9579

Virginia has a critical election in early November. Join the Justice Team, following the service on 10/22 in personalizing letters to young potential voters who are infrequent and under-represented.

We will send non-partisan messages to encourage them to VOTE! Choose specific letters for potential voters addressing Climate Change or Reproductive Freedom.

Our democracy depends on people voting.

October Shared Plate is Food What?!

Youth from Watsonville to Santa Cruz join the FoodWhat?! Crew through Spring Internship, Summer Job Training and Fall Project Management programs. FoodWhat?! youth use organic farming, nourishing food and loving community as vehicles to grow on their own terms and in lasting ways. As a FoodWhat?! Crew, they grow, cook, eat and distribute fresh, healthy food while also addressing local food justice issues.

FoodWhat’s?! impact is a direct result of the way youths’ wisdom, experience and personal gifts are honored. As such, FoodWhat?! is a safe space where youth are centered as agents of their own future. Youth use their strength to access opportunities that lead to radical diet change, critical job training, personal growth and more. Many youth share that through FoodWhat?!, they find healing, inspiration and family. For more information visit their website at: https://www.foodwhat.org/
