Peace Heroes

(In Person & Zoom)

The ongoing presence of war throughout human history has made it a brutal, but tacitly accepted phenomenon. But in different ways, and in different eras, certain people have bucked this trend.

On the day after the 104th holiday first called “Armistice Day,” we find inspiration in the stories of those with the audacity to wage peace.

November Shared Plate:

Unitarian Universalist

Service Committee (UUSC)

This month we share our Sunday collection with UUSC and their annual Guest at Your Table program. UUSC advances human rights by partnering with over 70 grassroots justice organizations and advocates in 22 countries, providing support, political pressure, media awareness, technical skills, and financing to change the systems that cause injustices.

Areas to advance human rights include Climate Justice, International Justice, Migrant Justice, and Crisis Response. In addition to the shared plate, you can invite a "virtual" partner into your home by placing a Guest At Your Table box at your dinner table. Engage in family discussion about their work and set aside money at mealtimes.

This week, "meet" our UUSC partner, Lidia Palma, Coordinator for the The National TPS Alliance. "Temporary Protected Status" is a legal designation from the Department of Homeland Security, assigned to nationals of a particular country when the circumstances in that country is dangerous enough to warrant temporary safety in the US.

Currently there are more than a dozen nations on the list whose citizens are granted TPS protections, including Burma, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Haiti. NTPSA works towards solutions to the issues facing those with or seeking TPS status, including legislation and social justice for immigrant populations. Learn more about NTPSA at https://www.uusc.org/initiatives/alianza-nacional-tps-national-tps-alliance/.

UUFSCC friend Teri Wiss will match these donations made to UUSC during this collection, making your donation go even further!

If you make a larger donation of $150 or more, it will qualify for an additional financial match. Talk to Teri or Chuck Torrey for details.

Community Item of Interest

A BRAVER ANGELS GROUP IS ASSEMBLING LOCALLY!

Hello, Monterey Bay Area "reds", "blues" and "independents"!

You are invited to the first meeting of the Monterey Bay Area Braver Angels Alliance, on Saturday, December 2nd, from 10:30am to noon in the Sam Karas Room at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC).

Gather to make plans to build a balanced red-blue alliance in the Monterey Bay Area.

For more insight on why we're establishing a local Braver Angels Alliance, feel free to read Deanna’s article in the 8/31/23 issue of the Monterey County Weekly.

There is no cost to attend the meeting on December 2nd and you don't need to RSVP or register. If you can't make it that day, we're planning to meet from 10:30am-noon on the first Saturday of each month throughout 2024.

We hope you will join us for meaningful conversations and community bridge-building, as Monterey County neighbors and as fellow Americans.

Warmly,

Deanna Ross (Blue Co-Chair) & Mike Gibbs (Red Co-Chair)
