Dairyland Awarded DOE Battery Storage Grant
Dairyland Power Cooperative received a $5.7 million U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant award to strengthen grid resilience by bringing long-duration energy storage opportunities to rural communities. Dairyland was one of five cooperatives included in the National Renewables Cooperative Organization (NRCO) grant application for part of $325 million in federal funding from the DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED).
vanadium flow battery (VFB) is capable of discharging 700 kilowatts (kW) to 3.6 megawatts (MW) of electricity for up to 20 hours.
The grant is intended to accelerate the commercialization of long-duration energy storage
technology that demonstrates significant cost reduction potential, high materials availability and performance advantages over current energy storage technologies. Fellow Midwest G&T Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) also received a grant on behalf of the Meswaki Indian Settlement in Tama County, Iowa.

Reliability Gets Top Billing During NRECA Regional Meetings
Source: NRECA
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is traveling the country this fall for its Regional Meetings to discuss threats to grid reliability and share a hopeful message about the power of electric cooperatives to advocate for commonsense policies and offer solutions that are innovative, effective and community focused.
“We are the ones at the tip of the spear on this issue, and I think that’s where we ought to be,” said NRECA CEO Jim Matheson at the Regions 1&4 meeting in Richmond, Va. “We’re innovative. We’re nimble. We’re responsive to local conditions. We know what’s important, and we get the job done.”
Employees from Dairyland and its member cooperatives met at the Regions 5&6 meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, the week of Sept. 11.

New Peak Record Set Aug. 23
|
|
|
|
The Dairyland system reached a new all-time peak load for the first time in five years. The new record of 1,177.5 MW was set between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 23, 2023, surpassing the former all-time peak record of 1,171 MW, set in June 2018. (This is the second such record in less than a year; the Dairyland system reached a new winter peak of 1,038 MW on Dec. 22, 2022, surpassing the former winter peak record of 1,034 MW, set in 2019.)
A heatwave crossed the nation the week of Aug. 21, with peak temperatures around 100 degrees (and higher) on Aug. 23. Compounding the problem were high humidity and low wind generation on the regional grid.
Did you know? Dairyland is a “summer peaking” utility. Air conditioner use results in significantly higher home and business energy usage in the summer. Periods of above-average heat and humidity drive up energy load on the Dairyland system.

IAEC Study Quantifies the Cooperative Difference
Source: Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives
Iowa’s electric cooperatives contribute greatly to the state economy, according to a recent economic impact study commissioned by the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives (IAEC) and produced by Goss & Associates (Omaha, Neb.)
For the five years ending in 2021, the study found that Iowa electric co-ops:
- generated a total impact on the state of $4.8 billion,
- produced $688 million in wages and salaries,
- directly supported 1,961 jobs,
- generated self-employment income of $79.5 million
- paid $144.7 million in state and local taxes
The study also concludes, “co-ops have assisted local and state organizations in the retention, attraction and expansion of businesses in the state. Separate from their spending impacts, electric cooperatives invest in efforts to attract and retain jobs and investment within their communities” to the tune of $14.7 billion in economic development projects (2018-22). These projects have retained, attracted or expanded 7,366 Iowa jobs during that same time period.

JEC Solar Initiatives Provide On-The-Job Training for Summer Employees
Source: Jackson Electric Cooperative
Jackson Electric Cooperative/JacksonSolar’s (Black River Falls, Wis.) crews installed solar energy systems at two of Jackson Electric’s substations this summer. On the crews were summer employees who have recently graduated from line school. As the electric industry progresses with renewable energy, these crew members will also be well-trained in solar technology.
A 40-kW solar system was interconnected at JEC's Irving Substation, and a 100-kW solar system was interconnected with their Brockway Substation.
Jackson Electric owns the renewable energy credits (RECs) on the Irving Substation solar and plan to own the RECs on the Brockway solar. RECs are used to track renewable electricity from the point of generation to the consumer. These solar systems will help in offsetting some of the consumer demand at the substation, thus keeping the Cooperative’s demand fees manageable.
In addition, Jackson Electric’s headquarter building is an Evergreen building. This, along with the solar energy installations, are part of Jackson Electric’s sustainability plan in reducing the organization’s carbon footprint.
