SVCC’s Johnson and Edmonds Participate in Opportunity 2027 Task Force
Dr. Quentin R. Johnson, President, and Dr. Michelle Edmonds, Dean of Nursing, Health and Science, participated in the Virginia Community College System's task force that developed the new six-year plan, Opportunity 2027, that will guide policy and programs at Virginia's 23 community colleges through 2027.

According to VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois, the resulting strategic goal of the plan is ambitious: Virginia's Community Colleges will achieve equity in access, learning outcomes, and success for students from every race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic group.

Members of the task force were awarded the Dana B. Hamel Award, the system's highest award for their leadership and service to the VCCS.

Thinking Outside the "Box"
Pictured with Sophie Crowder and her "Curie" box is Vincent Brown, Associate Professor, SVCC; and Dr. Quentin R. Johnson, President, SVCC.
During Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs summer camp at SVCC's Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill, Sophie Crowder had an idea to help combat the spread of COVID-19. She used her technical knowledge to come up with the "Curie" box which would utilize an ultraviolet (UV) light to disinfect items placed inside the box.

Vincent Brown, Associate Professor at SVCC who led the summer camp, assisted Sophie in bringing her idea to life by helping to assemble the first Curie box. "The innovative idea was all Sophie's and I was pleased to assist her in making her idea a reality," said Brown.

Since the creation of the first box, Sophie has assembled many other Curie boxes and donated them to local law enforcement agencies, school systems, health care agencies, and other frontline, essential organizations.

Sophie was excited to donate one of her innovative boxes to Dr. Quentin R. Johnson, president of Southside Virginia Community College. Sophie's creation has been on display in the lobby of the Center for Information Technology Excellence (CITE) in South Hill as an example of what innovative thinking, determination, hard work and technical knowledge can accomplish.
