SVCC mourns the loss of one of our most ardent cheerleaders, Mrs. Florence Daniel Riepe Kalbacker, who passed away at the age of 98 on June 19, 2020.
Florence always carried on her father's (John H. Daniel) legend to do whatever she could to make educational opportunities available to the residents of Southside Virginia. She supported SVCC in numerous ways over the years, including serving on our Local College Board and the SVCC Foundation Board. Her portrait, shown here, taken when she joined SVCC's Local Board, hangs in the Workforce Development Center on the John H. Daniel Campus.
In 2006, Florence was the recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Leadership in Philanthropy, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Virginia's Community Colleges and Southside Virginia Community College in particular.
Florence enjoyed seeing the success of SVCC students and was pleased with the variety of programs Southside offered from Truck Driver Training to Nursing. She read all SVCC mail and newspaper articles, attended events when she could and especially thrived on meeting and talking with students.
For her 80th birthday, Florence's family honored her by establishing the Florence Daniel Riepe Kalbacker Leadership and Community Service Award. This award is presented annually to an SVCC student who exemplifies those ideals that she embodied.
