September 1, 2022
Dear Friends in Christ:
This is an update for the next two weeks. As I see how the calendar is filling up over the next few months, I am filled with a sense of excitement as well as intimidation. There's a lot going on, and lots of opportunities to gather together, to carry out our mission statement of Worship, Hospitality, and Outreach. (WHO we are.)
In order to give you a handy list of what's ahead, I've moved the "upcoming dates" section up higher--like in Sunday's Gospel--so it doesn't get lost amidst the specific details. Please mark your calendars and join us whenever you are able.
On to the updates . . .

LATE SUMMER GARDEN DAY
Come on over this Saturday, September 3rd, if you've got a little time to spare, as we clean up the church grounds. There will be lots to do to get things ready for fall (weeding, mulching, edging), plus refreshments (donuts, water, coffee).
Bonus: You can have those hard-working hands blessed during our worship service the next day!

CHOIR PREVIEW TONIGHT
At 7pm, September 1st, our Choir will gather to receive new music and talk about plans for the coming months. Plus there will be refreshments! This is a great opportunity for interested folks to join us and see if offering your voice in worship might be something you'd like to do. We'll renew our regular rehearsal and worship schedule starting Thursday, September 8th, and sing during worship starting September 11th. Come hang out with us tonight!

MONTHLY CHILDREN'S SUNDAY
Starting next Sunday, September 11th, we will offer Children's Sunday the second Sunday of each month . Kids will head downstairs during the first part of the service to hear stories and do activities, and then join us in the sanctuary for Communion. For those children who are interested, they'll also have the chance to join Fr. George at the Altar during the consecration so they can see what happens up close.
Mark your calendars for the second Sunday each month, and bring the children to worship with us! Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13, Dec. 11, etc.

ECW MEETS SEPTEMBER 8th

When you ask for someone to be added to the prayers, they will stay on our list for four weeks unless we hear from you. We will maintain a continuing prayer list for those with ongoing needs. The email list below merges both lists.
Please be sure to let us know if someone should be taken off this list so we can focus on those in need.
Please pray for the people of Ukraine & Russia, that they would be kept safe and live in peace and safety. Pray for the victims of floods in Pakistan.
And please also keep these friends and parishioners in your prayers:

BISHOP SEARCH UPDATE
Our Bishop Search Committee presented the initial slate of candidates to the Standing Committee last month. You can find that slate by clicking HERE.
The "petition process" is officially over, though I do not know if any additional candidates have been added to the slate. In October, the final slate of candidates will take part in a series of "meet and greet" events around the Diocese. Then, at the November Convention we elect the 12th Bishop of our Diocese, who will be consecrated on April 29th, 2023.
The nearest Meet & Greet to us is at St. Paul's, Akron, October 24, from 6-8pm. This event will also be live-streamed, or so I am told. I encourage you to attend or tune in to get a chance to hear from these fine folks, one of whom will be our next Bishop!

PERIODIC PUZZLE
To prepare you for the plaster pictures below, I thought it might be helpful to see what our sanctuary looked like for the first wedding, which was held in 1898. You know, just for comparison's sake. You can find the puzzle by clicking HERE.
As always, you can choose your background color, number of puzzle pieces, and even set it to display just the edge pieces. Plus, you get a very affirming crowd reaction once you have completed it!
Also, if you want to take a trip down puzzle memory lane, you can go back and find the whole collection on our website at this LINK.

PROPERLY PLASTERED
If you've been in the church building the past week or so, you've seen lots of progress happening on getting the walls properly plastered. It's an inspiring mess, which is moving us toward getting things back in order. As I mentioned previously, we need to let this dry for about a month before it gets painted, so we'll be living with the white Rorschach blotches for a few weeks. Meanwhile, we're waiting for the folks from K Carpet to get us on their schedule for laying down the new sanctuary floor. Here are a few pictures to ponder . . .

Now that we're well into the month of September, I imagine we'll start seeing more folks in church on Sundays, and at other times as well. I just want to drop a gentle reminder that COVID has not gone away, and some folks are much more at risk than others. So please continue to be cautious around others, especially as cooler weather inevitably leads us to spend more time indoors.
And, as we head into this Labor Day weekend, I want to be sure to leave you with the collect appointed for the holiday. I find it significant that the Church sees fit to even have this collect, and I encourage you to spend some time thinking about what it says to us.
25. For Labor Day BCP 261
Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another
that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide
us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but
for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for
our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of
other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out
of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Faithfully,
Fr. George
