Dear Friends in Christ:

The plaster guys are supposed to be arriving this afternoon, or possibly next week. In order to make their repairs, there's going to be some scaffolding and plastic sheets in the sanctuary and elsewhere throughout the building. If it gets too crazy, we can hold our worship services in the parish hall. But I think we'll be fine. Once that work is done, it needs to dry for about a month I'm told, and then we can move on to painting and getting the new floor laid down. Thank you for your patience as we've slowly worked our way through stopping the water intrusion. Now we can move on to the more dramatic and pretty parts!

There is a lot coming up in the next few months, and I want to fill you in as best I can with this email. So get yourself a cup of coffee and prepare yourself for a lengthy update.

On to said updates . . .

CHOIR PREVIEW Sept. 1

At 7pm, on Thursday September 1st, our Choir will gather to receive new music and talk about plans for the coming months. Plus there will be refreshments!  This is a great opportunity for new folks to join us and see if offering your voice in worship might be something you'd like to do. We'll renew our regular rehearsal and worship schedule starting Thursday, September 8th, and join in worship starting September 11th. Come hang with us on the 1st!

MONTHLY CHILDREN'S SUNDAY

Starting in September, on the second Sunday of each month we will offer Children's Sunday. Kids will go to a classroom during the first part of the service to hear stories and do activities, and then join us in the sanctuary for Communion. For those children who are interested, they'll also have the chance to join Fr. George at the Altar during the consecration so they can see what happens up close.

Mark your calendars for the second Sunday each month, and bring the children to worship with us! Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13, Dec. 11, etc.

ECW & DIET CLUB RESUME

The Diet Club will resume their meetings in September starting on Thursday the 1st at 10:30am, and they encourage you to join them.

Also, the next ECW meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 8th, at 10:30am to discuss the fall rummage sale and bake sale happening in October. ECW stands for "Episcopal Church Women," so any and all women of the parish are invited and encouraged to attend.

NEW LAY PREACHER

As you may have noticed in the description of worship, on August 28th, Jon Silvis will offer his first homily as a Lay Preacher of the parish.  Jon went to a special training event in order to prepare for this, and we're excited to have him offer himself to this ministry among us.

He will need a small group of 3-4 people to debrief with him after that Sunday.  If you're interested in being part of that group, please see Jon or Fr. George.

KITCHEN STOVE UPDATE

We've raised a little bit of money toward the new stove by offering some dishes for sale, before we donate them to folks moving into transitional housing. (Don't worry; there's tons left!) If you've been thinking of purchasing some, please do that soon, as we'd like to pass along the remaining dishes at the end of August.

In other news, thanks to a generous contribution from Jan Smuda in memory of Fr. Erv, we are now halfway to the goal of $4,000 to replace our stove! If you'd like to contribute toward this lovely upgrade (which will allow us to feed our neighbors), we encourage you to do so. Please make checks out to St. Timothy's (with "stove" in the memo slot). Cash and online donations are also appreciated.

SPAGHETTI DINNER RETURNS!

Join us on Thursday, September 15th, from 5:30-7pm for the return of our Annual Spaghetti Dinner!

Always a fun time, good food, and great company. Meal includes Spaghetti, Salad, Garlic Bread, and Refreshments.  Plus, the ever-popular Raffle!

When you ask for someone to be added to the prayers, they will stay on our list for four weeks unless we hear from you. We will maintain a continuing prayer list for those with ongoing needs. The email list below merges both lists.

Please be sure to let us know if someone should be taken off this list so we can focus on those in need.

Please pray for the people of Ukraine, that they would be kept safe from violence and harm.

BIRTHDAYS and ANNIVERSARIES

LOTS of birthdays over the next two weeks, including Amanda Smith (8/23), Anna Schroeder (8/23), Rita Haines (8/24), Miriam Joseph (8/24), Matt Kurian (8/26), Ellin Schroeder (8/26), Tony Kovacevich (8/28), Sarah Emmert (8/28), Carol Traylor (8/28), and Diana Silvis (8/29)

Hal and Pam Dill will celebrate their anniversary on August 22nd, as will Paul and Janet Kaboth.  Robert and Mary Ann Fulton will celebrate theirs on August 27th.

Be sure to send good wishes and thoughts to all who celebrate in the coming weeks!

A NEW ALTAR BOOK

The family of our beloved departed Judy Wigginton has offered to purchase a new Altar Book for use during worship at St. Timothy's. Since Judy faithfully served on the Altar Guild for so many years, this is a fitting tribute indeed.

Our current Altar Book has served us well, but is definitely showing its age, as you can see in this photo. (For the record, that stain is from a previous Rector's time, and looks a little like coffee, if you ask me.)

Anyway, our current book is from 1980, which makes it 42 years old. Given that it's used at least twice a week, that means it has seen over 2,000 Eucharists in its day, which is a remarkable testament to the faithfulness of this congregation. The new Altar Book will be blessed and dedicated sometime in September. May it bless us all.

PERIODIC PUZZLE

Over by the southwest corner of the building you can visit what I call The Bee Hotel.  (Although it's actually called hyssop.)  Though you can only see a few in this image, at any given time there are dozens of pollinators swaying on these stalks.  And, as we learned last time, pollinators gonna pollinate. You can find the puzzle by clicking HERE

As always, you can choose your background color, number of puzzle pieces, and even set it to display just the edge pieces. Plus, you get a very affirming crowd reaction once you have completed it!

Also, if you want to take a trip down puzzle memory lane, you can go back and find the whole collection on our website at this LINK.

BISHOP SEARCH UPDATE

Our Bishop Search Committee presented the initial slate of candidates to the Standing Committee last Friday, and the slate was announced to the Church on Monday afternoon. You can find that slate by clicking HERE.

For now, there is a month-long petition process where additional candidates can be nominated; it's a lot of paperwork and intensive vetting to be added to the slate, so it does not often happen. In October, the final slate of candidates will take part in a series of "meet and greet" events around the Diocese. Then, at the November Convention we elect our 12th Bishop of the Diocese, who is consecrated on April 29th, 2023. (You can find more details about the schedule and sign up for online information HERE.)

As I've been saying, handing off that slate of candidates marked a serious burden off my shoulders. Serving on that committee was a lot of work, and took a lot of cooperation and conversation to winnow the field to where we now are. Throughout all that, I can say I've never had the opportunity to be part of a group that so diligently listened for the Spirit to move, and I am confident that we discerned well together . . . . but I'm still glad that's over!

PARKING LOT UPGRADE

My wife took this photo from the church parking lot last week. And I'm only including it because I think it's hilarious to imagine that this is how someone is arriving at church.

For instance, an increasing number of parking lots have electric car chargers and bike racks. But here at St. Tim's, we could offer hitching posts for the Amish, and hot air balloon tethers for those who are just floating by on their way to Kansas. 😏

BACK TO SCHOOL

Having grown up in New York, I experienced a school calendar that began the week after Labor Day and lasted until late June. As my wife rightly points out, this should no longer surprise me, since I have now spent half of my life in Ohio, but I still find it shocking that children are already boarding busses and meeting their new teachers. I don't think I'll ever get used to the Ohio timeline, jarring as it is.

But in honor of all those children heading back to school (a month early), I want to offer these two collects, from page 829 of the BCP:

For the Care of Children

Almighty God, heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the

joy and care of children: Give us calm strength and patient

wisdom as we bring them up, that we may teach them to love

whatever is just and true and good, following the example of

our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

For Young Persons

God our Father, you see your children growing up in an

unsteady and confusing world: Show them that your ways

give more life than the ways of the world, and that following

you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to

take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance

for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you,

and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus

Christ our Lord. Amen.

May God bless all the children of the world.

Faithfully,

Fr. George
