Current Work | Anna Heringer: Sustainability=Beauty
Anna Heringer received her architecture degree from the University of Arts Linz, where her thesis focused on Bangladesh. She is a recipient of the Aga Khan Award and the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, among others. She has taught at Harvard's Graduate School of Design, ETH Zurich, the Technical University Vienna, and other schools, and her work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, MoMA, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural league of New York.

Current Work | Michael Webb: The Notion of Motion
Michael Webb studied architecture at London's Regent Street Polytechnic School of Architecture (now the University of Westminster) between 1953 and 1972. In 1960, one of his projects found its way to the Visionary Architecture exhibition organized by New York's Museum of Modern Art.
A year later, Peter Cook invited Webb to join Archigram. Rebelling against what it saw as the failure of the architectural establishment in Britain, the group aimed to create projects that reflected the technological and social changes that the country was undergoing. Although unbuilt, Archigram's projects offered a new approach to urbanism and infrastructure: 1984's Plug-In City, for instance, proposed an evolving, movable megastructure that incorporated housing, transportation, and other essential services.

Cecil Balmond: Soft Logic, Serial Outcomes
This lecture leads with the question, "what is determinacy?" to presents Balmond's recent research into growth and form in exploration of an abstract biology. The talk will be illustrated by recent architectural and artistic work.
An internationally renowned artist, architect and engineer, Cecil Balmond OBE, is widely considered to be one of the most significant creators of his generation. Balmond transcends the conventional boundaries of discipline, working in the crossover between art and science. In this dynamic area, he has re-invented the very concept of space, transforming the meaning of geometry, form and structure.

Visiting Lecture | Hashim Sarkis: Cyanometrics
Hashim Sarkis is an architect, educator, and scholar. He is principal of Hashim Sarkis Studios (HSS), established in 1998 with offices in Boston and Beirut, and Dean of MIT's School of Architecture and Planning since 2015.
The architectural and urban projects of HSS include affordable housing, institutional buildings, and town planning. The firmÕs work has been exhibited around the world, including at MoMA and the biennales of Venice, Rotterdam, Shenzhen, and Valparaiso. The work has also been published extensively, most recently in a monograph by -Ness.docs.

Symposium | Thesis Now
Thesis Now is organized to address the agency, relevance, and history of the Thesis Studio in architecture curricula. The symposium is divided into three sessions moderated by Hayley Eber, Nader Tehrani and Eva Franch i Gilabert:
Session One will examine the agency and legacy that a thesis carries both in and beyond the academic experience.
Session Two will focus on the various forms and roles research plays in structuring a thesis by exploring thesis projects in the newly available Digital Access Project of the School of Architecture Archive.
Session Three will be an extended conversation addressing the shifting ideas of Pedagogy in relation to Thesis.
Participants include Andrew Kovacs, Caroline O'Donnell, Bryan Young, Deborah Garcia, Liz Diller, Jimenez Lai, Bryony Roberts, Farzin Lotfi-Jam, Arindam Dutta, Joan Ockman, Scott Colman, Stan Allen, Cristina Goberna, and Andrew Holder.

Exhibition | Archive and Artifact: The Virtual and the Physical
This exhibition celebrates the experimental and influential pedagogy of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture by presenting undergraduate Thesis projects completed at the school over the last 50 years.
Curated from materials documented in the Student Work Collection of the School of Architecture Archive, the exhibition includes drawings, produced by hand and by computation, and models of 35 undergraduate Thesis projects completed between 1969 and 2018. These materials are complimented by a preview of the School of Architecture Archive's Digital Access Project, an online database of the Student Work Collection that expands the scope of the exhibition. Visitors will be able to access the database via computer terminals in the gallery. At this time, the database is comprised of over 500 Thesis projects completed between the 1960's through 2003, including nearly 8,500 digitized records.

Panel | Henry Cobb, Preston Scott Cohen, Joseph Connors, Elizabeth Diller, Nader Tehrani, and Marion Weiss: The Predicament of Architecture
How do architects address the predicament between form and function?
A panel of influential practitioners and educators will offer their views, using as a springboard the recently published book Henry N. Cobb: Words & Works 1948-2018. Nader Tehrani will instigate the discussion with historian Joseph Connors and architects Cobb, Preston Scott Cohen, Elizabeth Diller, and Marion Weiss.

Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948-1980
Students of the School of Architecture designed and fabricated five models featured in this exhibition currently on view in the 3rd Floor Exhibition Galleries at the Museum of Modern Art. The Project began as an elective class "Modeling Yugoslav Architecture," taught by Matthew Worsnick, 2016-17 MRC Fellow in Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art.
The exhibition was organized by Martino Stierli, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art, and Vladimir Kulic, guest curator, with Anna Kats, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art.
