Current Work | Marina Tabassum: Dwelling in the Ganges Delta

Marina Tabassum founded Dhaka-based Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA) in 2005 aiming to establish a contemporary architectural language without losing its roots of place. Tabassum will discuss MTA's prioritization of local materials, climate, culture, and history as well as recent and ongoing projects.

Marina Tabassum graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1995. That year, she founded URBANA, where she was a partner for ten years. Tabassum is currently the academic director of the Bengal Institute of Architecture, Landscapes and Settlements in Dhaka. Her design for the Bait ur Rouf Mosque received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016 and the Jameel Prize 5 in 2018.

This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural League of New York. Tickets are free for Cooper Union students and faculty with valid ID, and League members.
Contested Ground: Design and the Politics of Memory
A conversation with Jeanne Gang, Amanda Williams, and Mabel O. Wilson

How can historians, architects, and designers make visible and physically memorialize lost histories - what the founding Director of the Smithsonian's National African American Museum of History and Culture, Lonnie Bunch, refers to as "histories that hide in plain sight"? What are the design implications of spatializing the politics of memory? To whom will these memorials speak, and what do they tell us about our shared past? A three-way conversation between Jeanne Gang, Amanda Williams, and Mabel O. Wilson will explore these questions based on their research and design projects addressing public space, race, and cultural memory.

This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural League of New York. Tickets are free for Cooper Union students and faculty with valid ID, and League members.
