EXCITEMENT BUILDS FOR MAR 15-16 ROLEX LOS ANGELES SAILGP:

RACE TIMES AND RACE MAP CONFIRMED

Excitement is building for SailGP’s return to Los Angeles this weekend as the league’s 12-strong F50 fleet prepare to go to battle on March 15-16 at the fourth event of the season. Taylor Canfield’s United States team will defend home waters for the first time this season when racing gets underway. Located on the Port of Los Angeles, the racecourse is one of the tightest on the 2025 Season calendar, promising fast and furious racing.

2025 PORT OF LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY INVESTMENT GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE: MARCH 24, 2025

The Port of Los Angeles’ Community Investment Grant Program provides an opportunity for non-profit organizations seeking funding or sponsorships for community-related events, programs and projects. The Port held a virtual informational workshop Feb. 19 to answer questions and facilitate the application process.

PORT OF LOS ANGELES NAMES STEPHANIE MANGIEN ROCKWELL AS CHIEF OF STAFF TO THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Port of Los Angeles has appointed Stephanie Magnien Rockwell as Chief of Staff to the Executive Director. In this position, Magnien Rockwell will manage special projects, act on executive and administrative matters, provide executive-level staff support and represent the Port before City of Los Angeles officials and other stakeholders.

USC TROJANS TAKE HOME PORT OF LOS ANGELES HARBOR CUP TROPHY

The Trojans of USC won the 17th running of the Port of Los Angeles/Cal Maritime Harbor Cup Regatta, after coming in second place last year.


USC Skipper Morgana Manti credits her team for the win. Their coach - Michael Segerblom was celebrating more than the team's first win since 2010 - earlier that day - he became a grandfather for the first time, welcoming grandson Hans Paul Segerblom to the world.

SAN PEDRO'S WEST HARBOR COULD GET A TIMELINE BOOST WITH NEW FUNDING

A new round of refinancing is giving San Pedro’s long-awaited new waterfront, West Harbor, a needed push to do more on a quicker timeline, the lead developer said this week.


The first tenant in the now-finished building — Harbor Breeze Cruises — could be ready to begin offering cruises as early as mid-to-late 2025, said Eric Johnson, senior project executive for West Harbor, with the other tenants set to be ready for business as early as the end of the year.

Port of Los Angeles Police Chief Tom Gazsi hailed the Port’s Cyber Resilience Center: “The Port established the Cyber Resilience Center hub here in the Port of Los Angeles which is a service provided to our tenants, customers, terminal operators, steamship lines, rail and trucking operators … to share cyber intrusion information, maintain anonymity of the source of that information within the Port environment and become an early warning system for the Port of Los Angeles (and its) business clients, tenants and customers…”

PACKED CROWD CHEERS CLASSIC ROCK, PAYS TRIBUTE TO LA'S FIRST RESPONDERS

An estimated 4,500 people turned out Thursday night, Feb. 27, to pay tribute to first responders with a classic rock concert at the Battleship Iowa in San Pedro.



The Rock for Responders benefit concert honored local, military and disaster response agencies and also launched the L.A. Disaster Recovery and Resilience Collective, a program designed to focus on building a “more resilient Los Angeles” in the wake of the Palisades and Eaton fires.

HISTORIES OF NATIVE AMERICA AND THE PORT OF LOS ANGELES WIN BANCROFT PRIZE

A sweeping history of Native Americans and a study of the creation of the Port of Los Angeles in the 19th century have won this year’s Bancroft Prize, one of the most distinguished honors for scholars of American history.


The second winner, James Tejani’s “A Machine to Move Ocean and Earth: The Making of the Port of Los Angeles and America,” published by W.W. Norton, reconstructs the complex interactions between 19th-century engineers, merchants, military, Native tribes and others that turned the tiny San Pedro estuary into what is today the busiest seaport in the Western Hemisphere.
