Did you know the Port's wharf can withstand an 8.9 magnitude earthquake? This is thanks to the resilient infrastructure investments we have made over the years.

Earth Month is back! It’s crazy to think how quickly this Earth rotation has gone by.

Here at the Port, we try to celebrate our planet 365 days a year with our various environmental programs including our Green Marine initiative, which we cover in more detail below. This credential helps us keep Mother Earth top of mind as we strive to develop sustainable solutions for reducing maritime transportation’s carbon footprint.

And what better way to celebrate Earth Month than to go outside? We have a lot of outdoor activities planned this month for all to enjoy. Check out the links below to learn more about these exciting events.

As always, we ask our visitors to keep green practices in mind. Please remember to pick up your trash so loose debris doesn’t land in our channel. Let’s work together to safeguard our planet for present and future generations.

Warm Regards,

Kristine A. Zortman

Executive Director

Port Continues Commitment to Green Initiatives

What does the Port do to help reduce their environmental impact? Glad you asked!

While we are committed to a variety of environmental programs, one of our most important initiatives is being a Green Marine participant. Green Marine is a voluntary certification program that encourages maritime enterprises to go above and beyond their standard environmental obligations. The focus of the project is dealing with issues related to maritime transportation, such as air quality, water integrity and soil stability.

To keep this certification, the Port must submit an annual self-evaluation before March 15 of each year. This evaluation is then published on Green Marine’s website and presented at their annual conference. We also must show steady improvements every year in order to keep the certification. Every two years, an external verification is performed. A representative of Green Marine will come to the Port and evaluate our report against their own findings.

This is just one way we try to go beyond the norm to be a good steward of the environment and help preserve our planet!

Earth Day on the Bay

Looking for a way to celebrate Mother Earth? Join the Marine Science Institute for Earth Day on the Bay!

On Earth Day, April 22, head over to the Marine Science Institute (MSI) for multiple family fun activities! You can take a Discovery EcoVoyage where you can explore what the San Francisco Bay has to offer. Travelers will help set a net to see what fish are swimming around, pull up a bottom sample of mud to see what’s hidden and discover the world of plankton. Voyages will be from 10 am-12 pm, 1 pm-3 pm and 3 pm-5 pm. Make sure to reserve your spot today.

Is identifying species more your thing? MSI has got you covered with their Shoreside Discovery and BioBlitz activity. You can help identify Bay species within MSI’s collection area and upload them to iNaturalist, an open-source database used by scientists and policymakers around the world. You can help scientists gather their data from 10 am to 12 pm, 1 to 3 pm or 3 to 5 pm.

What better way to celebrate your exploring than dancing! Enjoy the music of steel drums and other percussion instruments by the band Steel Jam. MSI will be hosting them from 12 to 1pm.
