Maritime Fun Fact: According to the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), United States ports contribute approximately $2.59 trillion to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP).

It’s been quite chilly this month in the Bay Area, but cold weather is no obstacle for cargo ship operators to efficiently exchange goods. Each cargo ship entering and exiting the Port experiences a unique voyage that connects us around the world. Their journey to and from our port supports a flourishing region of growth and opportunity for Silicon Valley.

We warmly welcome more than just cargo ships to the Port of Redwood City. We also encourage community members to visit our waterfront any time of the year to enjoy its vibrant scenery and discover how the Port plays a key role in developing and executing innovative strategies that advance the maritime industry. The creative art installations along the waterfront allow community members to explore the Port's rich history and its ongoing impact on the maritime industry today. Come take a stroll along the waterfront this week to experience these beautiful art installations by local artists.

As we near the new year, the Port of Redwood City prepares for the annual Port sponsorship program. The program cultivates partnerships between the Port and local businesses and organizations that maintain the Port’s resiliency and regional economic contributions. More information about the application process and submission deadline will be available soon.

From the Pacific Ocean to Redwood City

Have you ever wondered about the journey a cargo ship takes to reach the Port of Redwood City? It’s a winding voyage that starts far across the open ocean and ends right here in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Ships carrying goods from around the globe first navigate the vast Pacific Ocean before entering the iconic San Francisco Bay under the Golden Gate Bridge. From there, cargo ships make their way south beneath the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and continue under the San Mateo Bridge into the South Bay. The final leg of their journey takes them into the Redwood Creek Channel, where they dock at the Port of Redwood City to unload their valuable cargo.

Once their mission is complete, these mighty cargo ships rely on a specially designed turning basin to reverse course and head back out to sea, ensuring the process is as smooth and efficient as possible.

Cargo ship captains meticulously manage every detail of these extensive voyages — from bridge height clearances to tidal patterns, channel depths and water traffic. Their expertise ensures a seamless flow of goods that supports our regional economy and keeps Silicon Valley connected to the world.

The next time you spot a cargo ship in the Bay, remember the incredible journey it has taken to bring the world closer to Redwood City!

Public art along the waterfront

The Port of Redwood City offers more than a bustling gateway for commerce—it's a vibrant hub of creativity and community connection. A collection of public art installations beautifies the waterfront and reflects the Port’s rich history to demonstrate its commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for all.

Local street artist Marlon Yanes has transformed the waterfront with dynamic creations. His artwork brings the Port to life, from a 3D mural depicting the interior of a sailboat cabin to utility box artwork celebrating the Port’s heritage. His nautical-themed light posts add a touch of maritime charm, symbolizing the Port’s vital role in bolstering the local economy and promoting community pride.

As community members walk along the waterfront, they’ll also see a striking stainless steel statue of a Great Blue Heron — a native bird of the Redwood City shoreline. Designed by artist David Han using recycled materials donated by Port tenant Sims Metal Management, this eco-friendly sculpture reminds us of our shared responsibility to preserve the natural beauty and safety of the waterfront for people and wildlife alike.

The Port actively welcomes new opportunities for public art to continue creating a lively, dynamic space for the community. During your next visit, we encourage you to explore these inspiring works of art that spark creativity and connection.

Water recreation opportunities

Port sponsorship program opens in 2025

The Port of Redwood City waterfront is a lively space for recreation, connection and community events. Through the annual Port sponsorship program, local businesses and organizations can host events and activities to enrich the Silicon Valley experience. The sponsorship program focuses on four key areas that reflect the Port’s commitment to maintaining a thriving region through excellent maritime operations and creating a space for community members to value. These focus areas include:

  • Economic growth
  • Environmental stewardship
  • Youth and education
  • Community benefit

Organizations and businesses seeking sponsorship are encouraged to align their initiatives with at least one of these areas. The program urges organizations and businesses to take advantage of diverse possibilities to enhance the waterfront experience and maritime knowledge.

The Port is excited to expand its reach and impact in 2025. A call for sponsorship applications will open soon, so stay tuned for updates on the application process and deadlines. Let’s build a thriving waterfront together!
