Fun Fact: Did you know in 2023 the Port earned $10 million in gross revenue as a result of cargo operations?

The 2024 new year started off with a very important event, as we hosted assemblymembers from the Select Committee for Ports and Goods Movement. I’m delighted they chose our Port as their first meeting and tour of the year as we have a lot to show off – from our cargo operations to our future ferry site, it was a great chance to give lawmakers an up close and personal view of our daily operations. With their support, our staff can actively continue its efforts to serve the maritime industry and enhance our economic contributions to the broader Silicon Valley region.   

Additionally, our Port has been weathering all the recent rain events over the course of the past few months. With several sunny days, the waterfront is the place to enjoy crisp bay breezes and soak in the local flora and fauna that emerge to catch a few rays.   

This edition of Currents will feature highlights about the assemblymembers' visit to the Port, offer community organizations the option to apply for the 2024 Port Sponsorship Program and provide insight into the significance of the US-101/84 Interchange project and its benefits. 

I am excited to see what this year has in store for our community at the Port. It is a privilege to continue serving San Mateo County and the broader Silicon Valley region.

The Port hosts the State Select Committee for Ports and Goods Movement

On Friday, January 12, the Port of Redwood City had the honor of hosting the California State Assembly’s Select Committee on Ports and Goods Movement. The committee, including Assemblymember and Committee Chair Mike Gipson and Assemblymember Diane Papan, enjoyed a comprehensive overview and tour of the port.

Members of the California Association of Port Authorities Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) and Port Commission Chair Lorianna Kastrop and Vice Chair Stan Maupin also participated.

This was the fifth stop of the committee’s port tour of the 11 CAPA member ports. They also visited ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland in an effort to learn more about how their legislative work might best serve California ports in the year ahead. 

During the visit, committee members had meaningful discussions with port officials, stakeholders and industry representatives to gain insights into challenges and opportunities associated with goods movement.

The committee’s mission is to ensure ports across California remain globally competitive while minimizing and mitigating the environmental impacts of their operations. 

Call for Sponsorships - 2024

The Port of Redwood City is now accepting sponsorship applications from community groups for local programs and events taking place between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025. The application period is open until April 12, 2024, at 5 p.m. 

To encourage hosting events on the Port’s unique waterfront, the Port is offering an in-kind permit option for this year’s sponsorship opportunities.

The Port offers organizations sponsorship for events or programs that have a focus on maritime and waterfront recreation activities within four areas: 

• Economic growth
• Environmental Stewardship 
• Youth and Education
• Community Benefit

Investing in intermodal transportation

The US-101/84 interchange is an essential part of the Port’s main gateway for goods movement. With over 50 years in operation, it is crucial that the interchange undergo a project to modernize the freeway interchange. The $308M project has been designed, engineered and environmentally cleared, with $122M committed to date, regional agencies seek to obtain $186M from state and federal sources.

Benefits of the project include: 



• Regional mobility: Improve freeway connections and reduce congestion.
• Economic growth: Facilitate freight movement, attract new businesses and create jobs. 
• Safety enhancement: Implement safety measures to reduce accident risks for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians with dedicated spaces for non-motorized travel.
• Equity: Connect equity priority communities in the Port area to jobs, housing and recreational activities. 
• Port competitiveness: Improve supply chain efficiency and strengthen competitiveness of the Port on a global scale. 
• Emergency preparedness: Ensure the reliability of freeway access to and from the Port, which is the regions only FEMA-designated staging area with Bay access.
• Environmental impact: Lower greenhouse gas and other emissions by reducing vehicle idling and traffic delay. 

With the current financial commitment into this project of $122M, community leaders are encouraged to support this regional investment, for the future of the San Francisco Bay Peninsula region.
