Maritime Fun Fact: The United States has more than 300 ports overseen by states, counties, municipalities and private corporations.

This month, the Port of Redwood City is buzzing with activity. From celebrating the integral role of California ports in global trade to inspiring young minds with hands-on marine science adventures, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Silicon Valley.

California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA) and ports statewide celebrate California Ports Day in February to reflect on policies that maintain and invest in new technologies to strengthen global trade. The 2025 theme of California Ports Day is “Powering California’s Future,” encouraging state ports to discover how innovative operations power a prosperous maritime industry.

While statewide ports are celebrating this month, the San Francisco Bay Marine Science Institute (MSI) is helping our youth become marine life experts. Through MSI’s February marine science camp, young ocean explorers will dive into the wonders of the San Francisco Bay marine ecosystem through hands-on activities.

At the beginning of the month, we invited community members to enhance our landscape.  In partnership with CityTrees, Port staff and volunteers planted new trees along the waterfront to beautify our landscape and preserve the local ecosystem.

2025 California Ports Day

Imagine a world without ports – California would be cut off from global trade, disrupting supply chains and economic growth. That’s why California Ports Day goes beyond a celebration; it’s a call to action. Port authorities across the state will celebrate California Ports Day on Wednesday, Feb. 19. This annual celebration recognizes California Ports as the engine driving economic prosperity, global trade and job opportunities statewide.

The theme for 2025 California Ports Day is “Powering California’s Future.” Port authorities are laser focused on connecting with port executives, policymakers and industry leaders to explore and advance shared policy goals that elevate the future of maritime. Networking with port advocates who are passionate about investing in smart port policies means investing in the future of the communities they serve.

As a united front, we must continue supporting policies that keep California ports competitive, sustainable and ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Together, we will strengthen California’s connection to the world.

Planting seeds of growth at the Port

Preserving the natural beauty of Redwood City is one of many priorities for the Port. On Saturday, Feb. 8, a sea of local volunteers joined CityTrees for a special tree planting event along Chesapeake Drive. Volunteers planted 12 new trees, adding fresh greenery around the Port.

As a volunteer-led nonprofit, CityTrees plays a vital role in enhancing the Redwood City environment through public education, outreach and advocacy about tree planting, maintenance and support. CityTrees hosts several planting events from October to April as this time of year offers ideal conditions for trees to grow and thrive.

If you’re interested in joining CityTrees at their next planting event, sign up using their online form. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle, dress in layers and wear closed-toe shoes.
