More than 300 port authorities, port commissions and navigation districts operate in the United States alone.

June has finally arrived, which means more sunny days and longer visits to the beautiful waterfront with friends and family.

At the Port, we do our best to keep the waterfront clean. Maintaining a green port is a huge priority, and we incorporate green practices into our maritime services to ensure an environmentally friendly approach. For more than three years, the Port has been a proud Green Marine partner to uphold our commitment to transforming the maritime industry.

By incorporating initiatives such as water quality improvement projects, energy savings, recycling water and reusing dredging materials, the Port is helping anchor a greener future for the Silicon Valley region.

This month, the Port is preparing for some fun upcoming activities as well. Rock the Dock is a great event to kick off all of your June weekends, followed by fireworks on the Bay on Thursday, July 4, following the 85th annual Fourth of July parade with Peninsula Celebration Association!

The Port is also excited to host a pilot ferry service that will transport community members from the Port of Redwood City to the Port of San Francisco to attend a Giants game thanks to the new Redwood City Ballpark Service Pilot Program.

I encourage you to enjoy all the fun summer activities at the Port and create unforgettable memories with your friends and family.

Warm Regards,

Kristine A. Zortman

Executive Director

Tonnage and vessel reports

Ever wonder about the specific materials the Port is importing and exporting into the Bay area or where the materials are coming from? The monthly tonnage and vessel reports provide a table that outlines a few important details about the work of the Port, such as:

  • Vessel type
  • Date of arrival and departure
  • Import vs. export
  • Origin vs. destination
  • Commodity
  • Measurement of metric tons

Understanding the tonnage value allows the Port to determine port fees, vessel capabilities, regulatory compliance and more. With tonnage and vessel reports, the Port can improve our efficiency with shipping cargo and other materials.

Most notably, the tonnage and vessel reports are an important indicator of how the Port of Redwood City is contributing to the local economy and advancing our maritime services to the broader Silicon Valley region and other countries.

In April 2024, the Port imported and exported more than 93,000 metric tons of materials to a variety of countries. Click below to view tonnage and vessel reports from previous months.

A green Port

At the Port of Redwood City, we believe that the maritime business industry and environmental stewardship can co-exist to ensure a brighter future. The transportation of cargo by ship rather than truck significantly reduces traffic congestion on our highways and decreases air pollution. The movement of materials by ship from one place to another supports a healthier environment compared to planes, trucks, trains and other forms of transportation.

The Port is a proud partner of Green Marine, one of the largest voluntary environmental certification programs for North America’s maritime industry. Within Green Marine, the Port shares key performance indicators including greenhouse gases, air pollutants, spill prevention, stormwater management and community impacts, to ensure operations are minimizing impacts to our environment.

During your next visit to the waterfront, you can help keep the Port green and clean by picking up any trash you see and disposing of it in the appropriate bins. Together, we can lower our negative impacts on the environment.
