Maritime Fun Fact: National Maritime Day commemorates the first American steamship Atlantic Ocean voyage from the United States to England in 1819.

You know May has arrived when the Bay waters are warmer, the sun is brighter and the flowers are in full bloom. May is a month of celebrations, starting with National Maritime Day and culminating in the announcement of the Port sponsorship program recipients. We’re also excited that the drone show was yet another phenomenal event and that Rock the Dock is here to stay.

Every year, the maritime community looks forward to National Maritime Day on May 22. This is our moment to showcase the transformative power of the maritime industry — shaping global connections and driving economic progress.

Earlier this month, we had a fantastic drone show that lit up the night sky. It was truly heartwarming to see so many of our community members gathered together, sharing smiles and creating memories at the waterfront. I’m deeply grateful that we can keep this cherished Port tradition alive, made possible by the generosity of our event sponsors.

I’d like to share a heartfelt congratulations to all the recipients of the 2025 Port sponsorship program. We’re thrilled to support your upcoming events that will bring energy, creativity and joy to our vibrant waterfront. Thank you to every public and local organization that applied – your passion and dedication inspire us. We can’t wait to see what you bring to life, and we look forward to supporting even more community-driven ideas in 2026.

National Maritime Day

As seafarers navigate the vast seas and policymakers advocate for sustainable operations, the maritime community unites on May 22, National Maritime Day. Originating as a Joint Resolution passed by Congress in 1933, National Maritime Day became a time of year to reflect on the industry’s contributions to economic health and global connectivity, while reinforcing its value beyond the exchange of goods.

It's an opportunity for the maritime community to spotlight how their operations are essential for the success of other industries like manufacturing, agriculture and construction. Its transition into an innovative and sustainable industry is empowering the maritime community to adapt to the evolving dynamics of the global supply chain.

While we wish every day were National Maritime Day, we encourage everyone to raise a glass on May 22 to all those who tirelessly advocate to grow this unparalleled industry.
