Maritime Fun Fact: The Port Security Grant Program awarded over $100 million in 2021 to help protect critical port infrastructure.

October was a busy month at the Port! At the beginning of the month, we welcomed community members to our annual PortFest family festival. It was a fun-filled day on the bay and we hope you will visit again for more maritime adventures! Thank you to all who joined the event.

Additionally, the Port recently hosted its annual full scale emergency preparedness exercise. First responder professionals from around San Mateo County, the State, and Federal agencies collaborated on several exercises aimed at preparing for when a disaster may strike. We are honored to work alongside these agencies on safety and security training to benefit our community.

I'm also pleased to share that the Port received a Port Security Grant Program award for the fifth year in a row. Learn more about how this funding will continue to support regional resilience in the Serving Silicon Valley section.

Port of Redwood City conducts a full scale emergency preparedness exercise

On Thursday, Oct. 13, the Port of Redwood City hosted its annual full scale emergency preparedness exercise. This year’s event focused on active shooter, hostage aboard a vessel and building collapse exercises that included an emergency operations center and field play response simulation with over 130 players.

Due to the pandemic, this year’s full scale exercise was the first operation since 2019. The exercise is required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 and supports the Port of Redwood City’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designation as a Federal Staging Area (FSA).

In case of an emergency, the Port of Redwood City is strategically located to keep the movement of goods, people and emergency resources flowing throughout South San Francisco Bay. Learn more about Port safety and security partners by visiting our website.

Thank you for attending PortFest

PortFest 2022 was a spectacular day on the bay that welcomed the community to learn and participate in maritime activities while honoring Redwood City’s heritage and history as an industrial working waterfront.

The family friendly event included live music, children’s recreational activities, food trucks, vendor booths, and hands-on activities such as boat rides and behind-the-scenes tours of the working waterfront.

We’d like to thank our sponsors for helping make this a memorable, annual event, and we appreciate all the residents and visitors that joined us to celebrate our waterfront. The 2023 event is slated for Saturday, October 7.

Port of Redwood City awarded nearly $1M from the 2022 Port Security Grant Program

The Port of Redwood City is the recipient of a $952,637 grant from the 2022 Port Security Grant Program, from the Department of Homeland Security.

The award is part of the annual Port Security Grant Program (PSGP), which is designed to protect critical port infrastructure from threats that could impact public safety, supply chain disruption, cyber threats or other security challenges.

This year’s allocations will further the Port’s operational efficiencies, continue to enhance cyber security measures, and provide support to the region during natural disasters.

More than $100 million is being allocated to port authorities, plus supporting entities for this year’s PSGP. The Port of Redwood City is honored to receive funding through this competitive process.
