Message from Mrs. Rach

At the start of every school year, we work hard to establish a strong sense of community both in our classrooms and as a broader school community.  We also take time to review important safety information with both staff and students.  Our severe weather on Wednesday was a great example of why reviewing information and running through drills is so important.

This coming Tuesday, we will have our annual evacuation drill. We work with our District Safety Directors as well as local police departments to help coordinate drills like this. The goal of practicing the safety drills at Cushing, like evacuation drills, is to help our students feel safe at school and to know what to do if there ever is an emergency.  Our evacuation drill is similar to a fire drill, but we go to a safe inside location nearby.

Knowing that we have this drill coming up, you might consider pre-talking with your child(ren) at home, similar to what our teachers do.  For example you might say:

  • “Your school has drills to practice being safe and to learn how to do your job in an emergency.”
  • “Evacuation drills help us get out of school safely and help us get ready in case we ever need to leave the building.”
  • “You might need to leave Cushing for another place in an emergency.  Some reasons why you might need to evacuate offsite include a gas leak, or when the police tell us we need to.”

Pumpkins!

Please remember to send a pillowcase or strong bag to school on Monday if your learner will be bringing a pumpkin home. Precautions for a safe return to Cushing by Thursday, October 20 would also be a good idea. Carved pumpkins can be set on the grass by the Front Lobby doors.

If your family would like to carve a pumpkin to be on display, please return the permission slip linked HERE or email Mrs. Mirek (secretaryce@kmsd.edu).

**Pumpkins will be handed out on a first come, first served basis. Because we will be receiving a limited number of pumpkins, we may not be able to fulfill every request. Please only take 1 pumpkin per Cushing student in your family.

Welcome Mr. Bakkum - Cushing's & KMSD's New Mental Health Navigator

Hi Cushing Families!

My name is Scott Bakkum and I am the new Mental Health Navigator for the Kettle Moraine School District. I received my Bachelors Degree from UW-La Crosse and my Masters Degree in Counseling from UW-Oshkosh. After spending the last 24 years in the Oconomowoc Area School District as a school counselor, I retired this past June. I am now entering my 35th year overall in the field of education and I am very excited to join the Kettle Moraine team. I see this new role as an excellent opportunity to continue my mission of building positive relationships with families while helping students overcome challenges in their personal and academic lives. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my four precious grandchildren. I also enjoy traveling in the U.S. and abroad, attending Wisconsin summer festivals, golfing at local courses, and watching the Green Bay Packers! I am thrilled to begin this next phase of my career supporting students, staff and families in the Kettle Moraine School District.

Fall Book Fair: November 1-4

The spring book fair was a huge success and we look forward to another fun-filled week for the kids with the fall fair. Students will be able to visit and purchase books at the fair at a scheduled time with their classroom, as well as other times throughout the week.

The book fair is a fun event to VOLUNTEER at and we could use your help. Sign up today!

The Book Fair is open for parents and students as follows:

Tuesday, Nov. 1         9:00-4:00

Wednesday, Nov. 2    9:00-4:00

Thursday, Nov. 3*      1:00-7:00    *Parent/Teacher Conferences

Friday, Nov. 4*           8:00-noon   *Parent/Teacher Conferences

The preferred method of payment at the book fair is eWallet. eWallet is a digital payment option that gives students a secure, cash-free way to shop the book fair. Parents can create an eWallet account online which can be looked up for payment at the fair, eliminating the need to send money to school with your child. Each of your children will need to have an eWallet account as accounts cannot be shared or transferred. To set up your child’s eWallet account, go to Scholastic.com/fair and search for Cushing. Create/update your account and add the funds. eWallet funds will never expire and can be spent at the Scholastic store online after the fair ends, or donated to the PTO to purchase more books for Cushing’s classroom libraries.

You will also have an opportunity to help build your child’s resources as teachers will create wish lists of books that they would like to add to their classroom library, along with their recommendations of “just right” books for your child(ren). These lists will be available for viewing at the Fair.

The Book Fair is extremely important to our school. Over the last few years, we have raised thousands of dollars that has allowed us to update and expand the school and classroom libraries and put books into every student’s hands. If you have any questions concerning the eWallet or the classroom wish list program, please reach out to the book fair committee. Thank you in advance for your support.
