Message from Mrs. Rach

The past few weeks our students have worked with Ms. Hellmich, our school psychologist and Ms. Wiseman, our school counselor along with teachers and recess supervisors to build Recess Respect Agreements. As a part of the process, each child in the grade level had the chance to contribute as they shared their thoughts and ideas around a community circle.

Students shared how they wanted people to treat each other in four scenarios:

  • student to student
  • student to teacher / supervisor
  • teacher / supervisor to student
  • everyone to the playground

Just a few examples of thoughts that students shared included:

Goals of this activity included:

  • grow a sense of community between students, teachers and recess supervisors.
  • build meaningful accountability through caring relationships.
  • promote positive recess choices.

We will continue to revisit the commitments on each grade level respect agreement throughout the year and have already used them in restorative conversations with students and staff around tricky recess situations.

Halloween Candy Drive

Please bring in your extra Halloween candy to school October 31-November 4th. The Star Council Special Events Committee will have large donation bins by the front desk. If we can collect 2 bins full, all students will get to participate in a Buddy Recess. Dr. Michelle Kelly has offered to collect the candy in support of Soldiers’ Angels Treats for Troops - a Halloween Candy collection program where local businesses accept excess Halloween candy from kids in exchange for goodies, once Trick-or-Treating season is over.

A Message from Our School Counselor, Ms. Wiseman:

Dear Families,

As you know, our school counselor and classroom teachers are teaching children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school during classroom graduate profile lessons. This helps our campus be a safe, respectful place where everyone can learn.

To further help our campus be a safe and respectful place, we are going to use the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit. In these lessons, your child will learn specific skills to help stop bullying. Students will learn how to:

• Recognize when bullying is happening (bullying is one-sided, on purpose, repeated, and hurtful)

• Report bullying to a caring adult

• Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others

• Be an upstander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying.

In addition, your child might bring home simple, fun activities called Home Links that will help you understand what your child is learning about at school. They also give your child another chance to practice skills for handling bullying.

For bullying prevention to work, we need your help, too! Get involved in making our school a safe and respectful place by letting us know if you hear about bullying at our school. Make sure your child knows to tell you or someone at school if he or she is being bullied. And give your child the clear message that it is never okay to bully others.

If you have any questions about the Bullying Prevention Unit or the Second Step program, please contact our school counselor, Sarah Wiseman.  Thank you for helping us make our campus a safe, respectful place where everyone can learn.

Sincerely,

Ms. Wiseman
