Message from Ms. Hanson

Dear Families,

On Tuesday night, myself, Mrs. Klatt and Mrs. Oats presented about Cushing at the school board meeting. As part of our presentation, we were able to share information about the great work our students and staff are doing around project based learning, building a better understanding and skill-set around being an engaged citizen and self-management skills, and also shared data around academic growth and achievement. If you would like to watch the recording of the broadcast, the Cushing presentation starts at 27:00 minutes. Thank you to all of the parents who were in attendance that evening supporting Cushing, it was highly appreciated!

Cushing News & Announcements

Anything But A Backpack Day! - Friday, March 24th

Cushing Stars have been working on improving hallway behavior. Students can earn Hallway Hero slips for going above and beyond, and displaying exemplary hallway behavior. Our school goal has been to reach 300 Hallway Hero slips, and we have reached that goal! Some 5th grade student representatives brainstormed and voted on an all-school incentive for reaching this goal. Our reward will be Anything But A Backpack Day, which will be next Friday, March 24th! On this day, students can come to school with all of their supplies in anything that isn’t a backpack. We are asking that the following parameters are followed:

  • The container/item must hold everything a student needs for the school day
  • A student should be able to easily carry the item into and around the building and on the bus
  • Large items like canoes, large wheelbarrows etc. will not be allowed
  • Nothing motorized

Planning Ahead for Spring Recess

As a lot of you are aware, Cushing will be getting a new playground. This project should be completed by the beginning of next school year. At some point this spring, the removal process of our old playground will start and that area will be off-limits and not used during recess time. There are other areas for students to use outside during recess time, but we will be offering alternative activities for students in lieu of using the off-limits playground equipment and are asking for your help! Recently, there has been high interest in jigsaw puzzles and would like to add this as an indoor choice. If you have any 50/100/200/300 piece used puzzles that you are looking to get rid of, Cushing would gladly take them! Thank you for considering.

Rach Family Meal Train

Meal prep, cooking, and newborns don't really go together. Fortunately for Mrs. Rach and her family, Food is our Love Language. To help the Rach family as they navigate their new crew and day-to-day life, we have put together a Meal Train and will be delivering food on Wednesdays through the rest of the school year. Meals, snacks, and gift cards can be dropped off at Cushing Elementary.

Click HERE for the Meal Train. Thanks for your help. We all know it takes a village.

News from the Health Room

Strep Throat

We have seen an increase in absences due to sore throats and Strep. While this is common for

this time of year, it is important to monitor your child and keep them home if they become

ill. It can be difficult to know when a child is too ill to attend school. Our illness guidelines

provide you with information to help guide your decision.

If your student tests positive for strep, they may return to school 24 hours after starting antibiotics AND have been fever free for 24 hours.

A student with the following symptoms should stay home:

  • Fever of 100 degrees or higher (must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of
  • fever reducing medication).
  • Vomiting (any episode within last 24 hours)
  • Diarrhea/Watery Stool (any episode within the last 24 hours)
  • Persistent cough producing mucus or shortness of breath
  • Sore Throat accompanied by a fever or body aches and fatigue
  • Feeling lethargic or ill where they cannot participate comfortably in school activities.

Here are some simple but effective things you can encourage your student to do to keep

themselves and others healthy:

  • Wash hands often
  • Cover your cough or sneeze
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Get a good night's rest

It’s been a tough season for Strep.  Thanks for helping us lessen the spread.

Cushing PTO

Jump Rope & Playground Ball Collection

Do you feel like you have too many jump ropes and playground balls? Maybe your child received several from Jump Rope For Heart! Well the Cushing PTO is here to help take those off your hands. The week of April 3, one of your Cushing PTO members will be waiting at the carline after school to take any unwanted jump ropes and playground balls. No need to inflate playground balls if they aren’t yet. We’ll take care of that!! Simply spot us (we’ll make it easy) standing by the stop sign where the buses pass through. For questions please contact [email protected].

Spirit Wear Friday Is Back

Show us your Cushing pride!! Every Friday our Cushing Staff wears spirit wear and we’re inviting all students to join in and match the staff. Students may wear Cushing gear, decathlon shirts or anything blue and gold. Let’s see a sea of Cushing pride every Friday!

Clear Out Your Garage

Your friendly and helpful Cushing PTO is once again helping you declutter. As you are spring cleaning your garage or basement, if you find any outdoor games that you would like to donate to the school, we would happily take them. The Cushing PTO is trying to help the teachers and recess supervisors by finding fun things for the students to do once the playground demolition starts this spring. So if you have anything you’d like to donate, we would sincerely appreciate it. For questions please contact [email protected].
