Message from Mrs. Rach

Our Citizenship and Personal Development goal for students and staff focuses around being an engaged citizen as it aligns to our KMSD Graduate Profile.  More specifically, we are working to grow staff and student understanding of self-management strategies to treat others respectfully and respond constructively in situations.

Each month at Cushing, we host all-school assemblies and this year, assemblies are being led by individual classes! During these assemblies we highlight school accomplishments, build community and learn about or practice a Habit of Mind. The Habits of Mind are an identified set of problem solving, life-related skills.  Cushing focuses on five of these skills including: persistence, managing impulsivity, listening with empathy and understanding, thinking flexibly and taking responsible risks.  Throughout the year, we will visit and revisit these Habits of Mind through our assemblies.

On Thursday, a group of Mrs. Bestor’s fifth graders kicked off our student-led assembly series and taught us about the Habit of Mind, managing impulsivity through a skit they created.  Additionally, we will be recognizing students who go above and beyond demonstrating their ability to manage impulsivity by awarding them a special Star Slip called a Galaxy Slip.  If you’d like to learn more about managing impulsivity, check out this parent handout from the Institute for Habits of Mind.
